A+X #11 Review by (March 15, 2022)

Review: An odd note in the team-up book: both stories have the Avenger and the X-Man fighting. The first story is pretty lame with Thor acting like a smug jerk and Magik acting like a smug jerk though in a different way and that’s the entire plot. Neither one is seen at their best. The second tale has much more going on and is more entertaining, it’s just that Cyclops was always a bit boring and the Superior Spider-Man? I’ve never warmed to him and the less I see of him, the better.

Comments: First story takes place before UNCANNY X-MEN (2013 series) #5.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

A+X #11 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

Thor visits the armory in Asgard looking for Volstagg who turns out to not be there. He spies a horned skull from Limbo and picks it up against the Armorer’s warning and he is teleported away….

Magik is assisting Cyclops with new trainees in the Danger Room when she feels a disturbance in her dimension. She zaps over and finds Thor battling demons. Thor vows to take vengeance against her once he is through with the monstrous minions even though she denies being responsible for his coming there. She offers to rescue him but, in his pride, the God of Thunder declines. He lays the beatdown on the enemy, making a crater in the ground and hurls Mjolnir at Magik who blinks out before it arrives and reappears behind Thor. A giant serpent rises from the ground via the crater, accompanied by more demons. The two heroes fight together and when Magik offers to take them out of there, Thor again refuses; she does so anyway, telling him to stay out of her realm. He ends up wondering where in Midgard she has left him….

“The Superior Spider-Man + Cyclops”
Writer: Jim Kreuger. Art: Ron Lim. Colors: Chris Sotomayor.
Synopsis: Cyclops pursues an old woman down into the subway as she calls for help; Scott knows she is really Malice inhabiting a human body but the crowd goes to defend her. By this time, Malice has moved to the body of a young woman and boarded a train. Cyclops realizes this, fights off the crowd and smashes his way aboard. He locates Malice and challenges her—and then Spider-Man arrives, the Superior Spider-Man, Doctor Octopus in Peter Parker’s body. “Spidey” attacks Cyclops who tries to explain how he was framed for the murder of Professor X, reminding Spidey of the time he was framed for the murder of George Stacy by “that idiot Doctor Octopus.” For some reason, this enrages Spider-Man and he tries to kill Cyc who doesn’t understand why Spidey doesn’t recognize him as a former ally and isn’t making his usual wisecracks. Malice tries to enter Spider-Man’s body to kill Cyc herself but finds she can’t, Doc Ock’s will is too strong; instead, he uses his head to knock her in the face. She uses the crowd to pass from one person to another until she reaches and possesses Cyclops himself but he recognizes this trick and avoids her. So she threatens to throw her current host to his death from the train. Cyc leaps forward to prevent this and is possessed by the villain. But Malice can’t control Cyc’s eye beams so Spider-Man has to knock the X-Man out….

Cyclops wakes up in a lab where Spider-Man lectures him on deception being a part of the hero business and hands him a vial containing Malice, as Dr. Octopus had a means of separating Cyclops and the villain. Cyclops departs, glad the Spider-Man is one of the good guys….
