A+X #17 Review by (November 23, 2022)

Review: I will be honest and admit that, not being a fan of the X-Men, I had never seen this kid Broo before reading this issue. And now he’s one of my favorite characters, at least until the next comic I read. And there’s the charm of the story: an adorable little know-it-all making life miserable for Marvel’s most insufferable egotist, Tony Stark, until he comes to appreciate the kid and show him (and the reader) a good time. And the story really is a good time. The Cap/Cyclops story continues to thrill, this time with an epic battle which turns out to be an illusion. Alas, Dr. Doom goes down surprisingly easily. The introduction of a Skrull prototype promises some fun next time as does a band of SHIELD agents who turn hostile. No interplay between the two quarrelling heroes this time as they are on separate continents the whole time. Big wrap-up next issue!

Comments: First story: Broo was introduced in ASTONISHING X-MEN (2004) #40. And there’s a cameo by Iron Man’s rocket-powered roller skates! Second story: Part five of six. SHIELD Agent Scott Adsit is a regular in various Deadpool titles.

A+X #17 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

Tony Stark is hard at work on a project at Avengers Mansion when Beast stops by to drop off Broo, reminding Tony that he had agreed to let the young student shadow him for the day. He tries to ignore the kid as he is trying to build a Shi’ar cosmic wormhole generator—and then Broo makes one in a couple of minutes. Tony uses the report of a minor criminal disturbance as a pretext to change into Iron Man and escape. He comes upon some of the Chessmen attempting to rob a farmers’ market. Broo jury rigs a glider and follows him out there in time to see the third-rate villains take Shellhead down with an EMP. Broo gets him working again in seconds and Iron Man clobbers the baddies. Grateful, Tony has the kid shadow him throughout the day, trying on armors, gambling at a casino, fighting alongside Thor, meeting Broo’s idol Nova, and traveling out into space to marvel….

Synopsis: Doctor Doom lands on the South Dakota farm demanding the mutant Skrulls; he is met by a team of Avengers and X-Men and the battle begins. Doom crushes Wasp between his hands then electrocutes Iron Man. He breaks Hulk’s arm, forcing a change back to Bruce Banner and then Doom breaks Banner’s neck. Doom decapitates Wolverine and seizes Mjolnir from Thor and clobbers him—and then Doom realizes something isn’t right. This has been an illusion placed in Doom’s head by the Skrull telepath Z’Cann. Captain America explains that Doom’s armor was immobilized by a EMP device while the others have gone back to Latveria…

…where Cyclops leads the mutant Skrulls of Cadre K plus Ant-Man, Emma Frost, and the Stepford Cuckoos in destroying Doom’s lab where he was studying the captive Skrull. They discover a huge Skrull/Doombot prototype which fights them….

Back on the farm, Doom teleports out of his armor and sets it to self-destruct; the explosion hurls Cap and Z’Cann through the air but she is able to stop them telepathically. Then a SHIELD team led by Agent Scott Adsit arrives. Cap tries to explain that Z’Cann is no threat, which only leads Adsit to assume that Cap is really a disguised Skrull and he shoots at him….
