A+X #9 Review by (July 21, 2020)

Review: The first tale is okay though it lacks a proper introduction before throwing us into several pages of the heroes fighting giant animals. And the story tries for some gravitas by having Strange brood and ponder at the end. The second story is a comical trifle which is not much of a showcase for any of the young heroes and who needs a double helping of Dr. Strange? He’s already in the first story. Eye Boy is fascinating though hard to look at. Ugh.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

A+X #9 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

Doctor Strange has vanished after heading into another country to rescue a shaman friend. Captain America and Wolverine arrive in this misty land to find a village full of dead people, villagers and soldiers both; they end up fighting a giant snake and giant ants. Strange’s voice leads them to a cave where they encounter a chimp using a magic staff to fight them off. Once disarmed, the chimp goes back to normal and Strange appears to explain that the shaman was killed and the chimp found his magic staff, using it to create the giant animals to defeat the militia that killed him. Unfortunately, the chimp couldn’t tell the difference between the militia, the peaceful villagers, and the heroes. Strange surveys the carnage and regrets there is no spell to undo the damage done that day.

Writer: David Lapham. Art: David Lapham. Color: Lee Loughridge..

Synopsis: Quentin Quire and Pixie, in their ongoing competition, arrive at Dr. Strange’s Sanctum Sanctorum with Eye Boy as the impartial observer, to ensure no one cheats. This round will be determined by who steals the best artifact from Strange. While the two competitors search the building, Eye Boy discovers Strange in a hypnotic trance, his soul being sucked out by D’Spayre. The young mutants battle the demon but their attacks are ineffectual, though they do give Strange enough time to recover and banish D’Spayre. Strange thanks Eye Boy for his heroism and good intentions and rewards him with a special scope that enhances his already impressive vision powers. And then Pixie realizes Eye is using the scope to see through her clothes….
