Captain America: First Vengeance #1 Review by (August 29, 2012)
Review: This was a brilliant idea: shortly after the first trailer for CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER was aired during the 2011 Super Bowl, Marvel followed it up with a series of digital exclusive mini-issues giving background on the characters in the upcoming movie and serving as a set of teasers. It was collecting them in a series of four print comics that the problem appeared. And that problem is the lack of any real story to tie all the flashbacks together. This wouldn’t matter for a series of digital teasers but with something that passes for a genuine miniseries, a little more than a bunch of fight scenes is needed at the center. The finished product looks like a collection of deleted scenes from the movie.

Comments: Collected edition of a series that began in February 2011 as eight Marvel Digital Exclusives.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Captain America: First Vengeance #1 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro
April 1944: In a plane over the Nazi-occupied Danish Straits, Captain America prepares his gear and parachutes into the midst of a battle. His mind goes back to when he was Steve Rogers, dreaming of someday joining the Army like his late father. His seriously ill mother told him that with his health problems, he would have to fight for his dreams. As he lands and takes on the forces of Hydra, he recalls how he was frequently bullied, until he stood up to his tormentors, inspiring another kid, James Buchanan "Bucky" Barnes, to fight for him. Inside the Nazi castle, the Red Skull awaits his archenemy, hoping to demonstrate they are very much alike….

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

April, 1944: Captain America assaults a Hydra base in the Nazi-occupied Danish Straits; he recalls how he and his pal Bucky Barnes were in art class when word came of the attack on Pearl Harbor. Bucky agreed to help Steve train in the boxing ring, hoping to pass the physical for induction into the military. As Cap crashes through the hordes of Hydra guards, he remembers that all the trouble he went through was of no use, he was still rejected for service because of his unhealthy physique. He ran into Bucky on the way out, and his pal expressed sorrow—but Steve wouldn’t take no for an answer. Then, back in the present, Captain America comes face-to-face with an enemy wearing a huge mechanized battle suit….
