Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Captain America: Hail Hydra! #5 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

At the Metroplitan Museum of Art, Hydra agents break in to steal ancient artifacts but Captain America is there to stop them…. In the lost chamber of Horus at the Pyramids, Black Widow likewise prevents Hydra from making off with the canopic jars of an actual god…. Luke Cage wrecks a Hydra lab in New Jersey…. Steve Rogers assembles all the Avengers and briefs them on the mission he has been on for nearly seventy years: stopping Hydra from completing their Infinitas Agenda. They now know that the criminal organization is much older than they had suspected—over seven thousand years—and have been scheming for millennia to conquer death and create a race of gods. Steve has narrowed the list of possible sites for Dr. Geist’s lab to three, and the Avengers will have to hit all of them simultaneously in a series of coordinated attacks. Princess Shuri of Wakanda has loaned them three cloaked quinjets for the operation. After the meeting, Cap points out that Steve omitted the detail that he had been injected with the Lazarus Formula; Steve considers it unnecessary…

At the Hydra base, Commander Montag warns Geist that the lab should be moved; Geist is impatient to complete the project since he is dying and wants to prolong his life. Once Montag is gone, into huge vats containing Aryan giants, Geist orders the living blood of his agents spilled. Electricity courses through the vats and one of the new gods opens its eyes….

An Avengers team led by Iron Man, Spider-Woman and Wolverine assaults a Hydra base in Chicago; another team with Spider-Man and the Falcon crashes into the installation in Yosemite National Park; the third team with Steve, Cap and Thor invades the target under the Statue of Liberty and discovers Geist’s lab. Frantic battles break out in the three locations, with the New York team having to fight the undead hordes. When they arrive at the central lab, they find the crippled and deformed Geist—embedded in the chest of the Great God Hydra, an Aryan giant struggling to utter his first words. The giant seizes Steve in his massive fist while Geist gloats about Hydra’s ultimate goal: a world ruled by a new race of gods, purged of the racially impure—claiming even Thor agrees since he is refraining from attacking his fellow "god." Thor, however, if leaving matters up to Steve…. Steve points out that the god appears to be a drooling idiot. Geist orders his creation to destroy Steve Rogers, ending Captain America forever. The god refuses, tearing Geist out of his chest as a form of contamination. The Great God Hydra proclaims his ominiscience and in response to the dying madman’s pleas, executes mercy—by crushing the deluded Gesit. Steve tells the giant that if he truly is the embodiment of Hydra, the humans will never cease fighting him; the giant foresees Steve’s destiny, not as the champion of his country but of his species—and that it is possible he will never die or end his conflict with evil. Though created by Hydra, they do not own their "god," and so the man-made deity takes his leave. Steve is left pondering his next move when Hydra rises again….
