Captain America: Man Out of Time #5 Review by (October 9, 2011)
This issue makes a big deal about Cap having to get back to help the Avengers. But when he gets here all he does is smash a control panel freeing Iron Man and Thor. In Av#8 and EMH#4 Rick Jones frees the Avengers by pushing buttons. After that, in this issue as well as the other 2, Cap doesn't do much. Despite the fact that they elect him to field commander here after it's all over, Cap doesn't even display the minimal tactical ability here that he does in the other versions. Judging by the flashback with Executioner, the epilogue is probably after Av#9, where Zemo, Enchantress and Executioner show themselves again, this time with Wonder Man. At least in that flashback Iron Man's helmet has at last lost its anachronistic points. The Marvel Chronology Project provisionally has the epilogue after Av#10, though I don't know why. Whatever the choice, by then Cap has started his own split-book series in Tales of Suspense #59 alongside his Avengers appearances.

This issue neatly references bits of previous issues, in some cases linking them together like the end of an episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm. The guy Noonan is someone we met in Steve Rogers' squad in #1. The circus poster reminds us of Captain America's names for the Avengers in that issue. And he continues his search for Peggy Carter from #4. More significantly Cap uses the identicard Tony Stark gave him last issue and hides it with a message in Gen'l Simon's photo of him, which the General gave him last issue. He sets a timed alarm to go off after Kang has sent him back in time. The message asks Mr Fantastic to come and rescue him with Dr Doom's time machine. which Cap learnt about in #3. I've probably missed some more connections. Unlike Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes #4 this issue does remember that Wasp wasn't captured with the other Avengers, but it still doesn't mention her part in Kang's defeat. She is seen here next to Giant-man as he fires a gun at Kang. In the original Avengers #8 she brought that gun from Avengers Mansion, and its acid destroyed Kang's suit weapons.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Captain America: Man Out of Time #5 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

Having been returned to 1945, Steve Rogers settles into the familiar life like any other GI returning from the War: taking in a Dodgers game, shopping for new clothes and wondering what he is now going to do with his life. Yet something is different: he can’t get in touch with General Simon, his attempts to explain to black people how racial tensions will ease are taken as a rude joke, and he still can’t locate Peggy Carter. When he finally contacts Simon, he realizes there is nothing he can say….

In 2010, in the thick of battle with Kang, Rick Jones gets an emergency call on his Avengers IdentiCard….

Steve reads about the Invaders in the paper and notes that it did not take long to replace him. He tries to express his confusion to an old pal named Noonan; Steve mentions how Bucky did not survive but he left some other friends in trouble, and now he feels like he failed them too, and there’s no way to reach them. Noonan quotes Captain America, "There’s always a way." He goes home and ponders his IdentiCard, and gets an idea….

As Bucky races toward Cap’s room in the Mansion in 2010, Steve in 1945 writes a note and places it in General Simon’s framed portrait of Cap along with his IdentiCard. It is programmed to set off an alarm on the day Kang arrives on Earth; the note explains exactly where Cap will be at a given time and, sure enough, Reed Richards arrives in his time machine to pick him up and whisk him back to the 21st century and his comrades. Cap invades Kang’s ship just in time to aid Rick in freeing Iron Man and Giant-man from their cells. The united Avengers assault the alien invader, forcing him to retreat from the planet. His grateful teammates appoint him field- commander and Iron Man salutes.

Some time later, as Steve is hiking in the Grand Canyon, he writes in his personal journal how he has adapted to his new era once he started acting like a captain, leaving the past behind and moving into the future. He once asked Bucky what purpose Captain America served outside of war. "It was a foolish question. There’ll always be something to fight for. And I’ll always be a soldier."
