Captain America: Sam Wilson #24 Review by (July 29, 2017)
Comments: “Warning: Read SECRET EMPIRE #7 before this issue!” SECRET EMPIRE tie-in; the story takes place in the hours leading up to Sam's appearance at the end of SECRET EMPIRE #7. Donny Cates receives a co-writer credit. Though shown on the cover, Iron Man AI, Mockingbird, Quicksilver, Hercules and Ant-Man do not appear in the issue. Rayshaun Lucas became the new Patriot in SECRET EMPIRE: BRAVE NEW WORLD #2.

Review: “All talk and no action” could be the title of Sam's issue-length agonizing over whether to pick up the shield. Seeing the hero get chewed out by Misty and Shaun does put thing into perspective, since the reader has probably been wanting to yell at him for longer. Okay issue but a bit too indulgent.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Captain America: Sam Wilson #24 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

In the Arizona campground of the remnant of the Underground, Sam Wilson looks back on the events that led to him becoming the new Captain America and how it all fell apart. He recalls talking to his brother Gideon, pastor of a New York church, and Gideon's advice that he has to trust himself about whether to keep being Captain America....

When he tells this to Misty Knight, she gives him a dressing down about how he is needed by the people and he would only let them down by refusing to take up the shield. Sam counters that the people have turned against him and they don't deserve a Captain America...and he walks out into the night....

There he encounters Rayshaun Lucas, the new Patriot. Shaun hesitantly tells Sam that he is the whole reason he is doing this—because Sam was dumb enough to want people to like him so he quit, giving his enemies what they wanted. Shaun points him to the Underground refugees, that they need a Captain America....

Sam rethinks this and sees that this is the right time to resume the mantle of Captain America....
