Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty #4 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro
The squadron of Nazi Human Torch drones escapes from their chamber with a flaming rush that Captain America and the Sub-Mariner are unable to stop. Their flight leaves the walls of the climate-controlled lab weakened and slowly admitting water. Cap seizes Namor’s seacraft and uses it to rescue the American POWs from a watery doom. On the surface, General Phillips leads a Navy expedition in search of Atlantis (despite the skepticism of the destroyer’s commander) and then the ship is attacked by the Torch army. Their artillery is of little use against the fiery foe—until the Invaders arrive. The heroes use a delaying strategy to engage the enemy until they burn out; this will stop them from reaching the mainland. Seeing their efforts are barely holding steady against the foe, Cap conceives a dangerous plan: he and his partners lead the Torches on a chase to the escort ship where they lure their fiery opponents into the deepest part of the ship; Cap’s strategy: to double-back out the doors and seal the room, trapping the Torches inside, so they can sink the ship. The real Human Torch balks at killing his own flesh-and blood; Cap convinces him that he has a soul but these copies are only mindless machines. So the Torch holds them off while his partners head for the exit…but he chooses to stay behind, appealing to the enemy androids to embrace humanity. Overwhelmed he burns out in an explosion that sinks the ship and destroys the other Torches. Cap and Namor find his damaged body floating amid the wreckage and rush him to the lab in Atlantis where he is repaired by the scientists. There also the Atlanteans have risen up against their Nazi betrayers and Princess Fen orders the execution of the prisoners. Namor halts the act, refusing to be his mother’s exterminator but to obey the rules of war, ordering his men to return to Nazi prisoners ot shore. As he leaves with Cap and the Torch, he mutters how humans can’t be trusted…until the Torch reminds him of one: Captain America.
