Captain America #34 Review by (April 23, 2018)

Review: Oh gross!! Cap is being doused with ketchup on the cover! No, wait...it's only lava...that's better. Action-packed (even though it ultimately isn't real) issue is fun as most Jurgens issues are—and as comics that mimic a video game tend to be, when done right. True, there are a couple of loose ends: Cap's identity was once public knowledge so why didn't Cache have a record of that? And Cache is turned over to the police in the end—but on what charges? Trying to absorb all the world's knowledge isn't illegal and they can't prove attempted murder or mayhem. He isn't even human so how could he be arrested? But questions like these only add to the entertainment.

Comments: Title is a play on the business dictum “Cash is king.” First appearance of Cache (full); he will return in issue #39. Thor began to inhabit the mortal form of Jake Olson in THOR Vol. 2:1-3; Dan Jurgens and Andy Kubert were also working on THOR at this time. This issue's letters page is identical to the one on the previous issue, including the “next issue” blurb.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Captain America #34 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

Having passed out in the Parliamech offices, Captain America awakens to find himself in a cavern of ice, battling ice monsters, shattering them with his mighty shield and trying to make sense of his new surroundings....

In New York, paramedic Jake Olson (then the mortal guise of Thor, God of Thunder) and his partner Christine Collins are trying to save the life of U.S. Agent, brutally beaten by Protocide last issue. When they get him stable enough to go to the hospital, Sharon Carter and SHIELD arrive to take the battered hero into their custody....

Elsewhere, Falcon is leading Dawn Ridgeway and Josh Hoard through a treacherous jungle swamp....

Cap is still fighting ice monsters only now there is a lake of lava at the center of the iceberg, which is what finally convinces Cap that none of this is real. Attacked by fire-breathing ice dragons, Cap breaks through a wall and shorts out an electrical system, revealing a holographic studio. He now faces the enemy: Cache, a sentient software program in a metal body, absorbing the world's information. The machine man attacks, confident in victory because he contains the knowledge of every fighting style in the world; Cap shows that all the knowledge in the world “doesn't mean squat” without speed, strength, and training. While fighting, they crash through a wall and into the jungle where Falcon and his companions are shocked to see them. As Cache boasts of his great knowledge, Cap asks him the big question “Who is Captain America under the mask?” Cache freezes up in confusion, allowing Cap to kayo him....

Later, as the police take Cache into custody. Josh and Dawn explain how he created a data storage unit but it went rogue. Cap tells Josh that his next job will be putting back all the data that Cache stole....

Epilogue 1: Tracking down the truth about Agent Ferrari, Nick Fury and his aide Berger drive out to the middle of the Arabian desert where they find a white-domed building hidden between some cliffs....

Epilogue 2: At A.I.M. HQ the leaders discuss their failed attempt to infiltrate Parliamech with their creation Cache. They move on to Protocide's next mission: kill Captain America....
