Captain America #35 Review by (May 8, 2018)

Review: Well, there's a scary cover. Cap's first encounter with Protocide does not go well as he is beaten to a pulp while still saving the day. The issue is full of preparations for future storylines including presenting the truth about David Ferrari and the mission to recover the hijacked Helicarrier. But the climactic battle is the highlight, indicating a lot of excitement down the road.

Comments: The story continues in CAPTAIN AMERICA [ANNUAL] 2000 which features the origin of Protocide. The Helicarrier was hijacked by the Red Skull in X-MEN 1999 (one-shot) and will be recovered in issues #45-48. Jasper Sitwell was most recently seen in AVENGERS (vol 3): #32-34. First appearance of Chet Madden who will pop up a few times over some future issues. The David Ferrari plot will move to center stage in issues #41-45.

Captain America #35 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

A.I.M. prepares Protocide for his mission against Captain America by telling him that he should have been Captain America but Steve Rogers sabotaged the experiment, leaving Protocide for dead and usurping his position. A.I.M. plans to destroy SHIELD but they cannot do so until Captain America is eliminated....

A team of thieves is caught robbing a jewelry store by Captain America who quickly subdues them and turns them over to the police because he is in a hurry. And so, he arrives at Shea Stadium for his date with Connie Ferrari. They meet a former client of Connie's, Chet Madden, had been accused of various business improprieties. Steve wonders if Madden was innocent; Connie explains that it doesn't matter, he was entitled to effective representation....

In the Middle East, Nick Fury meets with Jasper Sitwell to learn what happened to Agent David Ferrari. Agent Ferrari was part of a SHIELD team assigned to destroy an A.I.M. bio-weapon lab; they were caught and, as a last resort, Ferrari released the deadly Omega Compound which destroyed the lab and the SHIELD agents. There was a cover-up, claiming Ferrari was killed in a hazing accident, designed to fool his sister Connie, the hot-shot lawyer. Then Fury learns that Ferrari's body was never recovered....

Back in the States, USAgent's life is saved by prompt medical attention. Then Sharon Carter and Dum Dum Dugan plan for the mission sending the Omega Compound out of New York....

Steve drops off Connie at her apartment while he goes out to “work.” He is protecting the Omega Compound shipment as Captain America; the truck is ambushed by a vengeful Protocide. The two super-soldiers fight with Cap taking most of the injuries but he manages to grab the vial holding the Compound before Sharon whisks him away in her flying car. When they land she and Dugan discover just how badly injured Cap is....

Continued in CAPTAIN AMERICA [ANNUAL] 2000.
