Civil War: House of M #1 Review by (July 5, 2022)

Review: My colleague Rob Johnson had this to say about the miniseries: “It's nothing to do with Civil War at all. It's just a cheap marketing ploy to get extra people to buy what is actually the prehistory of House Of M.” Having read it, I can confirm: Rob always knows what he’s talking about. But we're including it for the (nonexistent) Civil War connection.

So anyway, here we finally have the unseen origin of House of M, Magneto fighting for the freedom and dignity of his people. But as we see, he is always on the edge of exacting some sort of bitter revenge against his opponents and he needs the leavening effect of Charles Xavier to press him toward the more moderate path. Then Charles dies in issue #4 and he tries to carry on, honoring his friend’s memory but the final page shows the horrors that wait beneath the surface of Magneto’s mutant paradise. Which is why the event turns out the way it did, in a mutant dictatorship. Very nice miniseries, well-written and involving, often working up sympathy for Magneto then pulling the rug out from under him. And the artwork is quite attractive, with a solid look to it that draws the reader in. Too bad it has nothing to do with CIVIL WAR.

Comments: House of M is officially designated Earth-58163. Other mutants seen include Shocker, Peeper, and Banshee.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Civil War: House of M #1 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

Young Magnus survived Auschwitz but at the cost of his mother’s life….

Years later, Magnus marries Magda and they have a child, Anya. When the neighbors learn he is a mutant they burn his apartment, killing Anya. He takes a violent reaction against the mob and Madga, terrified, flees from him; she is pregnant with twins….

A year later, he is romantically involved with Susanne Dane, an American sympathizer with the mutant cause. When he learns she is pregnant, he insists she return to safety in the USA and never see him again….

In New York, scientist Bolivar Trask creates the Sentinels, a model of robot designed to hunt down and eliminate mutants….

In Egypt, Magnus, now calling himself Magneto, meets Apocalypse and joins his cause, fighting for mutants. Soon the two have a falling out over Apocalypse’s approval of atrocities against the humans and Magneto challenges him to fight. Apocalypse anticipates an easy victory as he has made sure no metal exists in the camp but Magneto reveals that the brain is an electro-magnetic field and so he tears Apoc’s head apart, nonfatally. Then a fleet of Sentinels is seen approaching; instead of hiding, Magneto takes them on and destroys them. He announces to the world through a group of TV reporters that, as the world has declared war on the mutants, the mutants now declare war on the world. This TV broadcast is seen all over the world: by Pietro and Wanda Maximoff in Transia, by Lorna Dane in California, and in New York by Professor Charles Xavier….
