Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Defenders, The #5 Synopsis by Jay Sprout
While our Namor and Dormammu's Namor watch the public humiliation of our Doctor Strange by Dormammu's Strange, Dormammu's Namor tries to convince our Namor that our Defenders are the only hope for the miserable people Dormammu's reality. He explains the only reason Dormammu even created this reality was to torture Dr. Strange (and Clea) with the sight and knowledge of it. Dormammu's Namor explains that in addition to our Namor's help with the rebels, they will also need the Hulk and - even more to Namor's dismay - Umar's.

While Namor reels from this news, Umar appears with Bruce Banner on a leash, crawling on all fours.

Umar explains that the people of this reality want to be freed of Dormammu's tyranny and she wants to be free of Dormammu himself - so they have a common goal. Dormammu's Namor explains that the rebels realize once our reality is restored their's is erased but oblivion is better than servitude.

They plan to attack while Dormammu is distracted with his final victory of torturing and killing Dr. Strange.

Dormammu's Strange suggests to Dormammu that it would be even more humiliating for Dr. Strange if Dormammu temporarily relinquished his new god-like omnipotence to beat Strange in the form he'd always been in before. Just as Dormammu reverts to his previous incarnation, he realizes he's been tricked. It was his version of strange that was held captive and the real Strange is free. Also at that moment, Namor and the rest of the rebellion arrive, strengthened by Umar channeling her power into them.

Umar tricks Dormammu into throwing Banner out the window which finally kicks in his transformation back into the Hulk. While Dormammu is fighting Dr. Strange, he realizes Umar is passing along her strength to Strange. As Dormammu vows to destroy them all, Hulk sneaks up behind him and claps his hands - around Dormammu's head.

Umar transforms Dormammu into a helpless, harmless little troll of a being and banishes him to Earth. The Defenders ask Umar if there's a way to restore their reality without erasing their brave comrades. No, she says - and the Namor who is about to be erased says their world "never belonged here in the first place."

They all return to Earth, bickering the whole way. Dr. Strange and Dr. Banner walk off into the sunset much like Claude Rains and Humphrey Bogart at the end of Casablanca.

The issue and mini-series end(s) with the Silver Surfer finally getting fed up with the surfers shallow and inane talk and leaving. His last words: "I should have let Galactus eat them."
