Generations: The Unworthy Thor and the Mighty Thor #1 Review by (August 27, 2017)
Comments: One-shot lead-in to MARVEL LEGACY #1. A number of familiar supporting characters can be spotted in the assembly in the throne room including Sif, Volstagg, Fandral, Hogun, Valkyrie, Enchantress, Executioner and more. Issue includes a tribute to the late Joan Lee, wife of Stan. Review: One of a series of one-shot titles from 2017 pairing the recent versions of characters with the originals, including Captain America, Iron Man, Wolverine and more. They are nice little tales, with the dual protagonists learning something about themselves from each other, nothing spectacular, though the art looks nice. The Thor issue is an oddity in that it introduces a previously unmentioned romance between Odin and the Phoenix which follows a few months after the Phoenix Force showed itself in a female form (in THE MIGHTY THOR (2015) #19 and promises this will be followed up on when things go back to normal in the aftermath of the SECRET EMPIRE event.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Generations: The Unworthy Thor and the Mighty Thor #1 Synopsis by Julio Molina-Muscara
Odin finds the as yet unworthy Thor in the Weapons Hall attempting to lift Mjolnir and orders him to attend at the Throne Room in his best clothing. Thor does so but while there he hears a prayer for help and rushes out so he is nowhere to be found when Odin calls on him.... Thor rides his mighty goat to Egypt where a band of Vikings is in trouble, facing the fury of En Sabah Nur—Apocalypse. While the two are still hurling threats at one another, a bolt of lightning strikes, revealing the future female Thor (Jane Foster). After a few moments of confusion, the two Thors assault Apocalypse together. Unworthy Thor leads the vikings against the Egyptians while Jane Thor is distracted by Loki who confesses to drawing the Vikings to Egypt in order to lure Thor. Again the two Thunder Gods battle Apocalypse, defeat him and set forth for home, having taken the Sphinx's nose for a prize. Jane tells Thor he will someday be worthy and never to forget that it is his humanity in helping those of Midgard, and that she has learned from him never to let go. At this point she is whisked back to her own time in a flash of lightning.... Back at Asgard, Thor tries once more—and fails once more—to lift Mjolnir. As Odin watches from space where he is with the fiery Phoenix. We learn they once had a romance that she denies but which has marked Odin's mind and soul as nothing else ever has, making him feel alive for the only time in a millennium....
