Hank Johnson, Agent of Hydra #1 Review by (December 4, 2019)

Review: Offbeat, if not oddball, SECRET WARS tie-in is a parody of 1950s-1960s TV sitcoms, with a harried husband trying to juggle work and home responsibilities. So what if his “work” is being an agent of an international terrorist organization? Coolest bit: the cover and splash page are homages to Jim Steranko’s work on NICK FURY, AGENT OF SHIELD. Another amusing incident: Hank and his wife take the kids trick or treating with him dressed as Rage and her as Scarlet Witch—and he is mistaken for one of the Village People. YMCA!

Comments: One-shot tie-in to SECRET WARS (3) under BATTLEWORLD. Collected in HAIL HYDRA along with that tie-in miniseries. Cameos by Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Iron Man, Rage.

Hank Johnson, Agent of Hydra #1 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

Nick Fury stealthily infiltrates Hydra Headquarters: he kicks a guard in the head and shoots the man’s partner, then enters….

The Hydra Agent with a headache is Hank Johnson, family man, nursing his pain, bickering with his wife about not helping around the house, trying to wrangle the kids into order, and hating it. At the funeral for his murdered partner, his wife nags him to talk to the dead man’s supervisor and maybe he can move into his job. Gets in trouble for including peanut butter in his kids’ school lunches. He hangs out at Little League with Clay Quartermain of SHIELD. Takes his kids to the wrong birthday party. Gets a promotion and his new boss Madame Hydra (a/k/a Viper) hits on him. Takes his kids out for Halloween dressed as Captain America and She-Hulk. Fights with his partner over basketball tickets. Takes the wife to a dull meeting at Viper’s house, gets bored and leaves just moments before the Avengers arrive. Reports Madame Hydra to HR for sexual harassment. Brings MODOK and Madame Hydra to a boring school fundraiser. Ends up being kicked in the head by Nick Fury while his partner is gunned down. Wonders if he can get his late partner’s basketball tickets.
