Hawkeye: Freefall #6 Review by (October 12, 2020)

Review: Aw, they killed Bryce? Bummer, man, I liked him, even though he was pretty much a standard slacker dude for Clint to bounce exposition off of. That aside, Clint’s elaborate scheme was quite clever and laid out in such a clever manner also sucked the reader into the deception he was pulling on the bad guy. And that spectacular Clint vs. Hood double page spread is a delight. And it ends on a dark note: in his efforts to take down a crime boss, Hawkeye has himself become a criminal and, sadly, he doesn’t know it yet. This appears to be the end of the series, though it isn’t clear whether it is a limited or an ongoing—and the letters page yields no clues. So, see you soon?

Comments: Clint has missed calls from Bucky “Winter Soldier” Barnes, Jessica “Spider-Woman” Drew, John “USAgent” Walker, Natasha “Black Widow” Romanova, Falcon (Old One) i.e. Sam Wilson, Danny “Iron Fist” Rand, Kate “The Other Hawkeye” Bishop, and Quentin Quire.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Hawkeye: Freefall #6 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

Bullseye, wearing Clint Barton’s Ronin costume, is on a murder spree in Bensonhurst when he is approached by Captain America. Cap, believing it is Clint in the armor, challenges him—and Bullseye shoots him in the chest with an arrow….

Finding Bryce critically wounded by arrows, Hawkeye rushes his hacker to Linda “Night Nurse” Carter for help because Bryce is wanted by the police. She labors over the wounded boy but Bryce dies anyway. She’s angry with Clint for putting her in this position but the grim archer walks out to hunt for Bullseye. He waits until Turk texts him that Ronin is near the Hudson Yards and Hawkeye heads there in Bullseye’s costume. There is a confrontation wherein the baddie boasts about ruining Clint’s reputation but Clint responds with an exploding arrow to take down his foe, following it up with several more arrows to staple Bullseye to the side of a train. The villain tells Hawkeye that the Hood has put a bounty on his head: if Hawkeye doesn’t turn himself in to Hood by 9 AM, three million dollars will go to the one who brings him in….

The next morning, the Hood is waiting in his office at the bank, with several parties interested in collecting the bounty (Taskmaster, Fancy Dan, Ox, Shocker, Armadillo, Rhino, and Tombstone); meanwhile, Hawkeye is downstairs, robbing the bank of three million dollars. He shows up in the Hood’s office, reveals that he stole the Hood’s three mil and tosses a duffel bag on the floor. Clint then offers the assembled bad guys the contents of the bag to not interfere as he beats up the Hood. There is a spectacular fight which the Hood, with his demonic powers, wins. Hood then opens the bag—and an even bigger demon emerges snatches the Hood’s red cloak and vanishes, leaving the gang boss a mere Parker Robbins. Hawkeye then reveals the detail he left out: after he stole the money, he gave it to Count Nefaria who directed him to a demon for hire…and now Clint tackles Robbins, hurling them both to the street, leaving him for the cops. As the hero walks off, Fancy Dan notes, “He’s one of us now. Even if he doesn’t know it yet.”
