Hawkeye: Kate Bishop #2 Review by (December 31, 2021)
Cris Peter helps with the colouring.

Last issue I guessed for various reasons that the Ringmaster & Circus Of Crime would be involved. A big clue should have been that chapiteau is French for circus tent.

There's a picture of a Jeff the Land Shark on the wall of Kate's hotel room. A reminder of the recent West Coast Avengers series. But how it got there who can tell.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Hawkeye: Kate Bishop #2 Synopsis by Rob Johnson
Last issue Hawkeye (Kate Bishop) was tricked by her estranged sister Susan into coming to the Resort Chapiteau on Long Island to help her find a stolen ring of some importance. Then a young girl named Kennedy went missing leaving a blood-stained jacket.

The Resort staff don't want Kate investigating the girl's disappearance but she refuses to hand over the jacket to them. They settle for requesting everyone to return to their rooms. Susan Bishop's more interested in getting her sister to find her ring but for now she lets Katie (she hates that name) and her dog Lucky into the room she's reserved for them next to hers.

However Kate changes into her Hawkeye togs and weapons and exits via the window and leaps from ledge to ledge looking for something suspicious. Then she sneaks into the apartment of Kennedy family and overhears Mr Kennedy on the phone promising to pay anything to get his daughter back. Hawkeye lets him know she's there and signals for him to ask for proof she's OK. The image he gets on his phone shows the girl happily playing with some toys in a wooden room, and there's a hand giving her another toy. The man says they should never have come back here but they had such a good time last time. Kate recalls her sister saying the same thing, but things like the ring replaced with a fake suggested that the experience wasn't as pleasant as she remembered.

Hawkeye leaves the room by using her bow to slide down a sloping wire (mainly because it provides a good visual). Then she hears a suspicious rustling in some bushes but it's only Susan and Lucky. Big sis says she overheard the staff saying there's no sign that anyone left the Resort so Kennedy must still be on the grounds. And Lucky leads them to a wooden hut (probably he'd got the scent from the girl's jacket). Inside they see Kennedy with 1 man with a gun.

Hawkeye kicks the door in and enters with drawn bow. Kennedy's glad to see her but the man goes berserk claiming that he must protect the girl. Kate and him fight while Susan escapes with Kennedy and Lucky. Hawkeye's the better and more athletic fighter but the guy just won't go down until she puts an arrow in his leg.

Then the man named Alex doesn't understand what's happening and what he's accused of. The last thing he remembers is having a good time watching acrobats. But for safety Hawk covers him with a net arrow.

Someone's watching via a drone camera and says she'll send someone to 'take care' of Alex later. And she asks someone if they're ready for the next phase of testing.

Our heroines and dog return Kennedy to her family. But then Kate notices that they're being surrounded by vacant-eyed staff and guests.
