Invaders, The #4 Review by (October 14, 2019)

Review: So, what is the secret history of the Sub-Mariner? It’s that he helped Professor X look for mutants before he invented Cerebro. Also, that the dead Tommy Machan is residing in his head to act as his conscience, manifested as his Atlantean aide Machan, seen over the last few issues and who we knew there was something wrong with. After all these decades we discover that Namor had a human conscience weighing on him? Seems odd but we’ll go with it for now. Plus, Charles Xavier was a bad guy (Senator Kelly was right!) and Wolverine has a cameo. This is a rather exciting series and adds a darker twist to previous Invaders stuff. And I’m starting to worry about Bucky!

Comments:The Secret History of the Sub-Mariner.” The account of Namor’s amnesia at the hands of the villain Destine was told in SUB-MARINER #1 in 1968. Carlos Magno drew the modern scenes while Butch Guice did the wartime episodes.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Invaders, The #4 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

Nay Peterson tells Captain America and the Human Torch about the Sub-Mariner’s long history with her family: After the War, Namor couldn’t adjust to life on the surface or life underwater, the only safe place he found was the Petersons’ home on the Maine coast. Eventually the duty of Atlantis called him back and he left. Many years later, when Nay was an adult and pregnant, an amnesiac Namor found his way back to them; his memories slowly returned and he helped raise Nay’s son Roman. But then Charles Xavier arrived; he told Namor he had been searching for mutants like himself and Namor was the first one he found. He soon persuaded Namor to help him in his search, though Nay’s father Randall didn’t trust the arrogant visitor….

Namor and Xavier searched the world for mutants, following up clues from the news and rumors (a clawed fellow in the Canadian woods hid from them). Namor was going increasingly short-tempered at the lack of success in their mission. Then in the town of Stony Plain, they were looking into reports of people acting like cats and dogs. There was a mutant named Tim Rhodes who could alter the species of any living creature. Xavier saw this as a way to turn humans into mutants; Namor thought it more likely that the government would use him to turn mutants into humans. While they are bickering, the police shoot and kill Tim Rhodes. Namor turns on them but suffers a breakdown. Xavier enters his head and discovers Namor’s pain over what happened to Tommy Machan; Xavier converts Tommy’s memory into a presence in Namor’s mind as an ongoing therapist. Eventually Namor wandered the world, was discovered by Johnny Storm (FF #4), restored to health, returned to the Petersons and now Nay is worried that Namor is planning something bad….

At the military base, Winter Soldier discovers the weapons components Namor is seeking, but the scientist Anna shoot shim in the back of the head with his own gun. She then contacts her true leader, Roman Peterson, who is planning with the Navy to destroy Atlantis….
