Comments: Part one of two.

Review: Comics adaptation of IRON MAN (2008) is much better than it had any right to be. The script is very faithful to the film and rather detailed, including bits I would have imagined they’d leave out for space and pacing considerations (sadly, Stan Lee’s cameo as “Hef” is omitted). Makes a handy reference for anyone wanting to check up on a point without sitting through the film’s 126 minute running time. The only mystery to this project? Why did they wait two years to publish it at the time of the release of IRON MAN 2 (2010) along with a huge number of other tie-in comics? So they could add a tie-in to the second film at the end!

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Iron Man: I Am Iron Man #1 Synopsis by T Vernon
On a trip to Afghanistan, millionaire inventor/playboy Tony Stark is seriously injured by one of his own rockets in enemy hands. He awakens in a cave, prisoner of Raza and his terrorist organization, demanding that the dying Stark build him a weapon. With the aid of fellow captive Professor Yinsen, Tony creates a miniature arc reactor to keep him alive while he builds a high tech suit of armor. Yinsen sacrifices his life to give Tony the time to charge the suit. Tony then walks out, fighting Raza and his men, and leaping into the desert where the armor falls apart and he is rescued by his pal James Rhodes and US Air Force….

Back in the USA, Tony has Pepper Potts call a press conference. There he stuns the world by announcing Stark will no longer build weapons, a decision that does not sit well with his partner Obadiah Stane. Later, Tony is forced to show the arc reactor to Stane but he will not reveal how it works. Tony spends his time upgrading the armor with flight capabilities, soon flying into space, icing up, and returning rather uncomfortably. Completing the Iron Man armor with a red and yellow paint job, he heads off to a party to reveal he is all well after all….
