At a press conference, prepared by Pepper Potts and supplied with a cover story by Agent Phil Coulson, Tony Stark steps out on stage and announces, “I am Iron Man.”
Many years ago, Howard Stark tried to recruit Anton Vanko to his team but the Russian had reservations about the use of Arc Reactor technology; Stark told him that they were changing the world….
Tony Stark goes out on a whirlwind of excitement, propelling a yacht with his armor, showing off for the ladies, rescuing those in need, palling around with Hugh Hefner, and enjoying the role of the first celebrity superhero. Pepper and Rhodey are concerned, while SHIELD keeps him under surveillance. He shows off by flying with the Blue Angels then goes partying with the pilots later. As military liaison, Rhodey is concerned that Tony as Iron Man is getting involved with international disputes and he resents being left out of the loop as Tony is responding to situations before he has been briefed. Then they receive a message of trouble in Al Kut and the military wants Iron Man to do reconnaissance before taking any action. But Iron Man blazes in and takes down all the terrorists in a fury of weaponry and has his action filmed by an American news crew that was in danger and arranges to have the film posted on his company’s PR site….
The military is disappointed in Stark’s reluctance to cooperate so they have called in an expert in dealing with superhumans: General Thunderbolt Ross. Ross has worked with Justin Hammer to create something to replace Iron Man: a single-pilot attack vehicle….
