Loki: Agent of Asgard #12 Review by (March 24, 2015)
Comments: Only Loki and the evil Loki appear in the story; all other characters are in flashbacks or flashforwards. Cameo appearances in the flashbacks are made by Angela, Malekith, Odin, Sigurd, Winter Soldier, and various Avengers including Captain America and Dr. Strange; Ultron shows up in a flashforward. Oddly, that unusual title is not a quote from some famous literary work but the creation of Al Ewing.

Review: Look at that revolting cover. It’s a metaphor for what happens on the inside as Evil Loki fills in our Loki on his past, present, and future. And they finally pull together all of what’s been happening to the character since before the beginning of this series and the light and entertaining tales take on a deeper and darker aspect. This should shape the character of Loki for years to come (specifically 10 years). But in Marvel continuity is made to be broken. Let’s see if the comic survives SECRET WARS first. Oh, one puzzlement: they don’t come back to the resurrected Avengers even though the future Thor vs. Loki episode is concluded here.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Loki: Agent of Asgard #12 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

Youthful Loki is secured to a chair as King Loki, his future self, explains their tortuous history. Young Loki proposed to the All-Mother to become her agent in exchange for Old Loki’s crimes being deleted from history and memory in a bid for redemption. The villain then takes us to a future desolate Earth where a much older Thor vows vengeance against him; Loki sneers and says that he merely pulled the plug on a Midgard destroyed by its inhabitants. Thor attacks and Loki raises the Avengers from the dead to take him on….

Back to the present: King Loki mentions several adventures from past issues and brings the story ahead ten years when Loki’s defeat of Ultron is enough to wipe out his debt and set him free. So why would he go back to being evil? Evil Loki had manipulated young Loki into freeing the evil one, who then offered the All-Mother a stable future with Thor on the throne—but only if Loki is the bad guy. So why all this? Because no matter how many acts of heroism he does to redeem himself, he will always be thought of as the God of Lies and never trusted. Kong Loki allows his passion to burn as a literal fire inside his young counterpart—which will lead to Evil Loki’s triumph….
