While trying to enlist in the army at the World Exposition, Steve Rogers comes to the attention of Professor Erskine who asks him to be part of an experiment. Soon after, at an army base, Colonel Phillips disapproves of the weakling Steve but he becomes the only soldier to show courage and leap on a grenade. Erskine explains to Steve that the treatment will make him strong and mentions Johann Schmidt, head of Hydra, who became the Red Skull because of an early formulation. The experioment the next day is a success: Steve Rogers becomes a super-soldier but a Nazi/Hydra spy kills Erskine; Steve captures him but the man takes poison. Steve volunteers for service but Phillips turns him down. He ends up as Captain America, appearing in war bond recruiting shows. On a visit to Italy, Steve learns from Peggy Carter that many allied soldiers are being held prisoner. He volunteers for a rescue mission but Phillips again turns him down so he sneaks behind enemy lines with the help of Peggy and Howard Stark. He rescues the soldiers and is reunited with his old pal Bucky Barnes. Captain America also encounters the Red Skull but the villain escapes. Cap marches the rescued troops back to camp and is hailed as a hero….
