Thanos: A God Up There Listening #2 Review by (June 25, 2022)
Layouts by Daniel Govar, Geoffo and Mast again. Neil Edwards helped Paco Diaz with the art.

The description of Ego should place the flashback part of this series in time. Galactus gave Ego a spacedrive in Thor #228. Much later Ego became Nu-Xandar when the Xandarian Worldmind took him over in Nova (2007) #21. In order to place the flashback years ago the Marvel Chronology Project feel they have to ignore Nu-Xandar as a current reference. The situation of Thanos roaming the galaxy with his fleet and Death (looking as she did in the Thanos Rising mini-series) makes therm put this series between the bombing of Titan at the end of Thanos Rising and his time on Earth beginning with his original 1st app in Iron Man #55. He and his fleet did supposedly continue ravaging the galaxy between those 2 events. Gamora's origin in the 2019 Thanos mini-series also fits in this gap before this series.

Thanos Rising is set before the Marvel Age begins, but Ego's spacedrive puts *this* series well inside modern Marvel history. In fact in publishing order Thor #228 is a year and a half *after* IM#55. But Thor's propensity for *really* long uninterrupted storylines allows them to put #228 significantly *before* #55.

The past versions of Ebony Maw and Proxima Midnight were also in the Thanos (2019) series.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Thanos: A God Up There Listening #2 Synopsis by Rob Johnson
In the present Ebony Maw has brought Thane, son of Thanos, to the planet Malady to learn stuff about his father from the alien Trynka who has Thanos' history recorded in his DNA. Thane will experience it via Trynka's telepathy (and we'll see it as a flashback in this comic).

The brief glimpse Thane gets now is of Thanos' Black Fleet confronting Ego The Living Planet. Captions refer to Ego as Nu-Xandar, travelling the galaxy with an interstellar engine attached to it by Galactus. But in the vision Thanos appears to detect Thane watching him although the alien denies that is possible. Trynka tries to leave because that memory isn't 1 he'd care to relive - he nearly died there. Thane is trying to deny that Thanos is his father but Maw urges him to accept his lineage. Thane orders Trynka to stop and the alien feels the power in the voice. So he agrees to let the son see it all. In a private booth Trynka shows how the full experience works. His eyes shoot out on tentacles and lock into Thane's eyes. And the flashback begins in earnest.

Thanos' fleet open fire on Ego. Death tells him it pleases her that the 'living' planet should die. She also endorses his plan to use the 'dead' planet as his flagship. (Watching this Thane, as others do, can't see who his father is talking to and assumes he's insane.) Proxima Midnight reports that Ego seems already dead, but Thanos orders 2 more salvoes. And indeed the Planet project very large chunks of itself into space, destroying half the Black Fleet.

More rocks follow and 1 of them is about to destroy Thanos' own ship. Ebony Maw has somehow joined Thane and Trynka in this vision where they all seem to be actually present. But Thanos won't *let* the craft be destroyed and his will bends the laws of physics to avoid it. But many of the crew are still ejected into space including Proxima Midnight and Trynka-in-the-past along with the past version of Ebony Maw. Thane see Trynka and Maw die, but then how can they be alive in the present. Trynka says he's not sure he is. Ego smiles and sends out tendrils which drag Thanos and Proxima into his mouth. Thane feels himself falling with them, burning up in Ego's atmosphere.

He screams in the present and declares that he *is* the son of Thanos. Which is heard by the denizens of Sclerosis Syd's Bar who take up arms because, according to Maw, they know that Thane must die in order to be fully reborn.
