Thor: God of Thunder #3 Review by (December 23, 2012)
Review: A haunting melancholy hangs over this issue, as Thor contemplates his own mortality and contends with the guilt he feels over leaving Gorr the God Butcher alive all those centuries ago. Jason Aaron shows us a side of the hero we’ve never seen before, more sensitive and introspective than the Thunder God found in recent runs on the series. Esad Ribic’s art presents us with a variety of other worlds and while it isn’t as flashy as the recent work of Pascual Ferry on Thor, it is effective. The most amazing part is the teamwork of writer and artist as the past, present, and future Thors intertwine to forward the story and comment on the action in a way few comics have done. And they manage to keep things very clear as we jump between eras. A triumph.

Comments: Issue includes a tongue-in-cheek interview with Jason Aaron.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Thor: God of Thunder #3 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

Thor visits Omnipotence City, the nexus of all the gods, a neutral ground where pantheons meet and make treaties, marry, stand trial, and appear before the ruling Pantheon of the Gods. Thor heads to the Halls of All-Knowing where the snide and disdainful librarian shows him to the Hall of the Lost, a wing dedicated to all "inactive" gods. Unable to believe the great number of them have been murdered by Gorr the God Butcher, Thor takes down several random names and visits those gods’ worlds. On each he discovers the deity dead, slaughtered, and one of Gorr’s eyeless Black Berserkers standing guard. He kills each monster in turn and moves on, reaching the Galactic Frontier, where he discovers the corpse of the giant saurian Falligar the Behemoth, a god Thor knew and liked. Blaming himself for all that has happened as he left Gorr alive at their first confrontation, Thor rips the head off the Berserker and challenges Gorr to final battle….

A.D. 893: Thor awakens after his near-deadly confrontation with the God Butcher (last issue). He strides out into the snow to track the monster to his cave. On his way, he encounters the partially dismembered Hinkon, Siberian God of the Hunt. The Thunder God promises no mercy for the enemy//now in the present, Thor enlists the aid of Iron Man to locate Gorr’s cave once again. When Tony, startled by his companion’s unnerved expression, offers the aid of the Avengers, Thor rudely rebuffs him, but has second thoughts about the decision. Realizing it was his foolish pride which led him to face Gorr alone, he explains the situation to Tony and dispatches him to Olympus to warn the Greek gods. Thor slowly enters the cavern where he learned the true depths of his enemy’s horror and nearly died at his hands. He calls on the All-Mother Freyja to gather the Aesir to the safety of Asgard and leaps at the shadowy figure lurking in the dark….

In the past, young Thor entered the same cave, issuing a challenge to the God Butcher. Gorr vows to kill Thor slowly to avenge his wounding of the villain, a suffering which will last to the very end of time//a violent battle which we see the aged Thor engaged in at a far future time….

….the present Thor seizes his opponent and discovers he is not Gorr but a green amphibian god, hiding in the cave as it is the one place Gorr will never look for him. This strange god tells Thor that everything the God Butcher is doing is because of what Thor did to him in this cave; gods are dying because of Thor//young Thor falls beneath his enemy’s onslaught//old Thor is overwhelmed by his opponents, the Black Berserkers….
