Comments: The complete Venom/Deadpool story is collected in VENOM/DEADPOOL: WHAT IF? Bobby Oceanic is based on pop star Billy Ocean. Boy Watcher is patterned after pop star Boy George.

Review: Bob Layton and David Michelinie return for a different look at the hero they are famous for, this time popping him into a What If romp to turn things topsy-turvy. Decent enough story, okay art and a happy ending that features the twist that heroic Doom no longer wants his identity as bad Tony back. Because Tony Stark (comic book not MCU) is a totally honorable man. Cool and enjoyable but not one of this uneven (and overlong) series’ best efforts.

What If? Iron Man: Demon In An Armour #1 Synopsis by T Vernon
The Watcher shows us Tony Stark meeting Victor Von Doom as college roommates. The driven Doom and hedonistic Tony take an instant dislike to one another but soon Doom realizes that Tony Stark possesses a brilliant mind. Doom enlists Tony in a secret project to increase telekinetic powers via a brain modifying machine. It is when Tony is strapped in that Doom reveals the real nature of the device: he plans to swap their minds and leave Tony amnesiac in Doom’s body while he goes on to replace Tony Stark. And that is what happens. “Tony” goes home, arranges for Howard Stark’s death and gains all the wealth and power he thinks he deserves. “Doom” struggles against amnesia and eventually earns a Ph.D and founds his own tech company to benefit the world while Stark Industries grows increasingly ruthless under the power of its villainous CEO. Then Stark learns that Doom has created a working arc reactor and dons his prototype (green and white) battle suit to go and steal it. When Stark arrives, Doom puts on his prototype rescue armor (gold with red cloak and tunic) to stop him. The suits are mismatched as Doom’s armor contains no weapons so it looks as though Stark will kill him but Doom is able to mimic Stark’s brainwaves and detonate his rockets while they are still in his armor, defeating him. Stark reveals their switch of minds and offers to give real Tony back his own brain—but Doctor Von Doom refuses as Tony Stark has made his name a byword for greed and cruelty and Doctor Doom is an honorable man….

Boy Watcher of Earth 615.9 relates the story of Deadpool and how he came to affect all continuity: Deadpool was summoned by prospective client Galactus. As herald Nova (Frankie Raye) explains, the Beyonder played a nasty practical joke on Galactus (attaching MODOK to his butt) so Galactus wants him dead. Deadpool asks for the Continuity Cube as payment, granting him absolute relevancy. Nova gives Deadpool a weapon to kill Beyonder with: the Retcon Expungifier, and sends him out after his quarry. Deadpool finds Beyonder in a nightclub drinking champagne and canoodling with gorgeous women. Impressed by his target’s jheri curls, ‘Pool decides to join him, not kill him. They are out in Beyonder’s limo when Spider-Man (black costume) crashes in and confronts Beyonder over the suit; Spidey is blown away by a gun wielded by Beyonder’s chauffeur Bobby Oceanic and the symbiote attaches itself to Deadpool, creating Venompool, a red monster with teeth, tongue, and sentient jheri curls—and he really likes it….
