Avengers Origins: Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver #1 Review by (November 5, 2019)

Review: One of a set of five one-shots each recounting the origin of one or two Avengers, each from a different creative team. While fairly well-done, none has much to add to the versions we’ve read before. This one makes much of the loneliness and need for belonging on the part of Wanda and Pietro and their tentative contact with the Avengers.

Comments: Cameos by Spider-Man, Scorpion, Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, Hawkeye, and Giant-Man. Wasp seems to be absent from the group picture—or too small to see. Gerry Henderson contributed to the colors.

Avengers Origins: Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver #1 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

On the run in Eastern Europe, the displaced siblings Wanda and Pietro Maximoff accept a ride into town and an offer of lodging from a local village couple. One day when Pietro is in town, the husband tries to rape Wanda; defending herself she sets the barn on fire and a mob gathers to burn her for a witch. Pietro rushes to her side and then Magneto appears to take them under his protection. At home, Magneto explains to them the concept of Homo Superior and the need to wage war against those who would destroy them….

Soon they are in the conquered city of Santo Marco, a safe haven for mutants but Pietro’s cynicism and Wanda’s naivete about Magneto’s motives divide them. Pietro picks a fight with Toad and Mastermind over their lusting after Wanda. Then Pietro discovers that Magneto may be their father and the siblings confront him but before there are any answers, the X-Men (Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Beast, Iceman, Angel) arrive looking for a fight. When both Wanda and Pietro refuse to kill in Magneto’s cause, they are locked up but manage to escape and without anywhere else to go they travel to New York. They feel safest around the Avengers and meet with them and are accepted onto the team as Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver.
