Avengers Origins: Vision #1 Review by (September 24, 2019)

Review: One of a set of five one-shots each recounting the origin of one or two Avengers, each from a different creative team. While fairly well-done, none has much to add to the versions we’ve read before. This one boasts a dark and dreamlike art style that is an unusual choice for a sci-fi oriented issue but it works and works well.

Comments: This is largely a retelling of a single comic, AVENGERS #57 (October 1968) but lacking the very distinctive cover. Co-written by Kyle Higgins and Alec Siegel

Avengers Origins: Vision #1 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

Ultron-5 creates an android which will remain nameless to carry out its wishes. Ultron spends much time training the creation in the use of its powers and then moves on to the next lesson. Ultron gives the creation a crash course in the history and development of life on Earth, which creation is told that they are going to replace. Ultron then tells the creation of the Avengers and commands creation to kill them….

Creation enters Avengers Mansion while Janet Pym is fighting with her husband Hank over his neglecting her for his work. She storms off and sees the invader; turning into the Wasp but it grabs her and tries to strangle her. Hank becomes Goliath and swats the interloper. Hawkeye and Black Panther arrive and there is a massive battle, four against one. Panther realizes that the killer isn’t human so Jan shrinks and flies into its nose and wreaks havoc. Creation extracts her from his head and realizes that any one of the Avengers would sacrifice his life for the others and winders if they really are trying to destroy Ultron, or just trying to survive. Ultron arrives to finish the job and the creation turns against its creator, as he has just seen Ultron do with Hank Pym. The creation destroys the creator which dies saying that the creation will never be “one of them.”…

The next day, Wasp speaks with the creation and asks why it did what it did. Creation responds that it was seeking Ultron’s approval and love and now it is alone. Jan invites it to come live with the Avengers, all it needs is a vision of what it wants to be and strive after that. “A Vision” it asks and she leaves the creation to give itself a name….
