Free Comic Book Day 2019 Avengers #1 Review by (August 2, 2019)
This issue as usual gives a foretaste of things to come.

Avengers:-

The Defenders Of The Deep and the Squadron Supreme Of America have already appeared in the current Avengers series, and #11 suggested that they have already clashed in Alaska. I don't know whether the battle here represents any particular future event.

The trouble with Ghost Rider's Hell Charger is presumably a hint of the Challenge Of The Ghost Riders beginning in Avengers #22.

Captain Corsair's Avengers are probably in an alternate reality. But our Captain America says in #21 that Daredevil with Heimdall's omniscience (during War Of The Realm's) warned him of a dangerous new Starbrand.

We've known about the 1 Million BC Avengers since the Marvel Legacy 1-shot, and several Avengers issues. But now it seems the 2 teams will meet?

Savage Avengers:-

This story is not so much a foretaste as a prelude to the new Avengers title.

Wolverine reaches the Savage Land in Savage Avengers #1 but Saviano is already dead. Elektra doesn't get there until #3. The 3rd Eye Of Agamotto is also in #1 but it is something necessary for the bad guy's plan rather than bait. However it *does* lure Conan in. The Klyntar symbiote is meant to attract Venom, but instead it does its own thing in #3. The 3 coffins contain Punisher's family and he comes after them in #2.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Free Comic Book Day 2019 Avengers #1 Synopsis by Rob Johnson
This issue is divide into 2 parts:- Avengers and Savage Avengers. They are given tongue-in-cheek titles on the last page.

Avengers: Make mine Avengers
Writer Jason Aaron. Artist Stefano Caselli. Colours Erick Arciniega. Letters Cory Petit.

Iron Man finds himself in a snowy wilderness with sabretooth tigers and no wi-fi. He deduces this isn't the Savage Land but the deep past. More on this at the end of the story. But somehow his voiceover commentary continues in the more present-day segments of this tale.

In the near future a Roxxon heliderrick in the Gulf Of Mexico is attacked by Sub-Mariner and his Defenders Of The Deep.  The Squadron Supreme Of America take them on. The voiceover mentions recent Avengers stuff:- The creation of the latest team to fight the Final Host of the Celestials. The Atlanteans declaring war on the surface world. The Vampire Civil War. The War Of the Realms. The American Government sponsoring the Squadron in competition to the independent Avengers.

In the Avengers Mountain HQ Black Panther, Blade and Ghost Rider face Robbie Reyes' Hell Charger car gone wild.

In Shi'ar space lies the Ravenstar Maximum Security Prison Galaxy(?). The Imperium has sent a group of Avengers in to rescue their Majestor Gladiator/Kallark. But these aren't the Avengers we know. She-Hulk looks like the pre-Civil War II version, but she has a version of Cr'reee (of the Starjammers) on her shoulder. Captain Marvel appears to have her Binary powers. Thor is possessed by the Brood. Their leader is called Captain Corsair. And their destination planet has a giant Starbrand on it.

Back in the far past Iron Man is saved from the cats by the hammer Mjolnir. But it is wielded by Odin with the Avengers (1MBC).

Savage Avengers: Vs Free Comic Book Day
Eriter Gerry Duggan. Artist Mike Deodato. Colours Frank Martin. Letters Travis Lanham.

Wolverine remembers how the popular opera singer Saviano regularly helped him smuggle hunted mutants to safety in his private jet. Now Logan is investigating his disappearance. His sense of smell tells him the Hand were involved, which is confirmed when some of their ninjas attack him. He keeps 1 alive to question, who gives him a potion to drink which will allegedly take him to his friend. But Wolvie has detected the smell of the Savage Land on the ninjas clothes, and says he'll make his own way there.

In a ruin near Cairo another Hand ninja delivers a wrapped body to an Egyptian cultist. As they unwrap the body the ninja asks about progress. The cultist says the bait for the warriors their master needs is being gathered. This body turns out to be Stick of the Chaste, bait for his finest student Daredevil. We also see someone holding the 3rd Eye Of Agamotto, a jar containing a Klyntar symbiote, and Saviano kneeling next to 3 coffins, 1 large and 2 small.

The cultist asks the ninja why Stick wasn't taken to the City Of Sickles in the Savage Land like the others. Stick sits up and says they wanted to know where to go. And the ninja kills the cultist with a sai, adding that Stick's finest student isn't Matt Murdock but herself, Elektra. She sets out for the Savage Land, but not before agreeing with Stick that this whole thing might have been a trap for *her*.
