Iron Man: The coming of the Melter #1 Review by (June 4, 2021)
Comments: This comic is a tie-in to the MCU, with the main story taking place between MARVEL’S IRON MAN 3 PRELUDE #2 and IRON MAN 3 (the movie). Issue includes a variant cover by John Romita Jr./Mark Morales/Frank D’Armata and the cover to IRON MAN #73 by Gil Kane and Mike Esposito, newly recolored by Tom Smith.

Review: Mediocre effort has okay art but the story offers a moral lesson about how teamwork, not competition, is the best way to get things done. I agree but this seems more appropriate to an all-ages (read: kids) comic book than a tie-in to a PG-13 rated movie.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Iron Man: The coming of the Melter #1 Synopsis by T Vernon
Tony Stark, in full Iron Man armor, holds a press conference on the roof of Stark Industries, to unveil a new product. Suddenly, he is attacked by the Melter, who causes the company sign to collapse on the hero, promises another demonstration, and offers his gear for sale to the highest bidder before jetting off….

Two days later, War Machine is helping test a new military drone when the Melter arrives and attacks him. The villain crashes Rhodey’s systems and punches him out before flying away….

Tony and Rhodey meet to compare notes. A computer search reveals the Melter to be Bruno Horgan., a weapons designer whose demonstration of a new armor to the military failed and he was blackballed, later creating the Melter tech. Tony and Rhodey make a friendly bet on who finds Horgan first that the loser has to polish the winner’s armor. Rhodey goes through all the resources of Military Intelligence while Tony’s approach is a bit more haphazard. It’s not until they compare notes that they identify Horgan’s base in an automobile scrapyard. Iron Man and War Machine take on the Melter on his home ground where everything can become a weapon but the two, working together, defeat him. They shake hands.
