Unholy Union #1 Review by (February 15, 2010)

Review: Flashy but ultimately pointless crossover as it doesn’t look like it can contribute anything to the subsequent series since it’s likely the three Marvel characters can’t even be mentioned. Therefore, they have no real point here. Hulk and Ghost Rider appear out of nowhere to instigate two fights which merge into one and vanish just as quickly as they came. But then, without Hulk and GR, there would have been no action scenes so a contrived issue to add some contrived action for a contrived purpose. That’s a lot of contrivance for a thirty-page comic. I wonder why Marvel went along with this?

Comments: Crossover between Marvel and Top Cow leads into the latter company’s FIRST BORN #1. Hulk and The Darkness previously met in THE DARKNESS/THE INCREDIBLE HULK (June 2004), a previous collaboration between the two companies.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Unholy Union #1 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

Doctor Strange detects a great disturbance but cannot see any more of what is going to happen, to Wong’s dismay….

Jackie Estacado is at a bar with his pal Butcher, celebrating his acquittal in court, thanks to his lawyer Matt Murdock who believed he was innocent (wink). Detective Sara Pezzini (former Witchblade now pregnant) confronts him, thinking he was guilty, threatening him to stay out of trouble. She goes off with her pal Danielle Baptiste, current bearer of the Witchblade. Ghost Rider crashes into the bar to bring vengeance on Jackie; Jackie becomes The Darkness, and the battle begins. Outside, Bruce Banner, presumably triggered by the antics inside, morphs into the Hulk and crashes in to fight The Darkness who he remembers he doesn’t like. Dani takes on her Witchblade persona in hopes of ending the violence. No such luck, the battle just spills out into the street. Darkness conjures up demons that resemble Wolverine, Thing, Absorbing Man, and Abomination but Doctor Strange arrives to freeze Hulk and Ghost Rider in time and then teleport them away with their memories of this incident erased. Strange warns Jackie and Dani about an approaching war and wishes them well before vanishing….

Epilogue: Velocity is seen working on her jet, unaware of anything that has just happened….
