Avengers Standoff: Assault on Pleasant Hill Omega #1 Review by (April 30, 2016)
Comments: Origin of the new Quasar ( Avril Kincaid). Other villains with non-speaking roles spotted include: Bi-Beast, Blizzard, Blood Brothers, Brothers Grimm, Eel, Grey Gargoyle, Jack O'Lantern, Klaw, Tiger Shark, Wrecker.

Review: A nice entertaining mini-event and not too prolonged. And it brings Steve Rogers back as Captain America and, not coincidentally, in time for CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR), which is nice. Recall that the last time Steve wasn't Cap, they restored him to the colors just in time for the first CAP movie. And as it sets up some new comic tales, it doesn't go in for crazy or bizarre, keeping things a bit more modest—besides they're saving all of the big stuff for the aftermath of CIVIL WAR II.

Rob adds:-

I'm guessing Red Skull was never actually a prisoner in Pleasant Hill. And he seems to have been mentally controlling Zemo. It's unclear what he thinks he's achieved. It even sounds like he *wanted* Steve Rogers to get his youth back. Maybe he wants to make sure Steve survives to see his final triumph.

Avengers Standoff: Assault on Pleasant Hill Omega #1 Review by (April 30, 2016)
This is a continuation from Alpha of my survey of the tie-ins.

Uncanny Avengers #8
This continues from ANAD Avengers #7.
Both teams are living new lives in Pleasant Hill. But Rogue was trained by Prof X to resist psychic attacks. She recovers her memories and sets about reawakening both teams. But when she's succeeded the Kobik girl arrives to put them back to sleep.

New Avengers #9
This continues from #8.
The US military send American Kaiju, a man mutated into a really giant lizard, against Sunspot's AIM. They respond with Avenger Five - a giant robot crewed by 6 of the New Avengers team. Hawkeye and Songbird are sent to mobilise Avenger Two (whatever that is). But they are interrupted when John Garrett, without authorisation, leads a SHIELD squad to recapture Whisperer/Rick Jones.

Illuminati #6
The Hood helps Titania rescue Absorbing man from Pleasant Hill. But it turns out he liked life there, and even fell in love with Sheriff Eva who turns out to be Elektra. However he suggests they build an even bigger Illuminati team from the awakened villains in the Hill.

Agents of SHIELD #4
This continues from #3 and overlaps with NAv#8.
In crossover terms this just covers the relevant part of NAv#8 from SHIELD's POV. For the rest of the issue they get on with their own plotlines.

ANAD Avengers #8
This continues directly from UAv#8 and CASW#7.
Quicksilver saves the ANADA and the Unity Squad from Kobik. The 2 Maria Hill's that brought them here *both* turn out to be fakes - the real 1's been with Steve Rogers in ASAPH Alpha and CASW#7. Loads of minor villains attack and defeat the Avengers until Deadpool persuades Kobik to help them. She heals them and returns their costumes, etc and they predictably beat the villains. Then Steve Rogers calls them to action.

New Avengers #10
Continues from #9.
Songbird reveals she's a SHIELD spy and joins John Garrett's team. Sunspot's AIM escape through a portal to Avenger Two, but Hawkeye stays behind to hold SHIELD off. Rick Jones also stays hiding on Avengers Island. The Avenger Five robot defeats American Kaiju with a suicide explosion, but Sunspot's squad also escape to Avenger Two - which turns out to be the NAv's *real* base in the Savage Land. Where Sunspot is reunited with his old pal Cannonball.

Captain America: Sam Wilson #8
Continues from #7 and ANADA#8.
Steve Rogers, Captain America and Winter Soldier go looking for Kobik. But so do Baron Zemo's gang. But they don't find her because she's with the Avengers in ANADA#8. Agent Kincaid reaches the museum looking for something and is saved by a mysterious curator. And the 2 Avengers teams show up at the last minute.

Avengers Standoff: Assault on Pleasant Hill Omega
The threads from CASW and ANADA come together.
The baddies capture Kobik. With Graviton's help they even trap the Avengers. But the curator turns out to be the retired Quasar and the maguffin is his Quantum Bands which he gives to Kincaid as the new Quasar. And she saves the day, followed by a grand melee.
Sam and Steve agree to both be Cap. Bucky and Kobik go off to found the new Thunderbolts. Steve finds Rick Jones hiding, presumably on Avengers Island, but not to arrest him.

So this event was really about the return of Steve Rogers as Captain America.

The main storyline ran through the Pleasant Hill trilogy and the CASW issues.

ANADA and Uncanny Av contributed the heroes to fight the final battle.

Agents of SHIELD and New Avengers followed the Rick Jones/Whisperer thread but mainly did their own thing.

Howling Commandos of SHIELD and Ultimates at least made it into PH.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Avengers Standoff: Assault on Pleasant Hill Omega #1 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

SHIELD Agent Avril Kincaid narrates part of this story, giving an overview of all the events that wrap up this adventure:

Baron Zemo is torturing SHIELD captives who have been wired as living bombs, enslaving them as he was enslaved by them....

Kobik, the manifestation of the Cosmic Cube, is drawn to Kraven's birthday party, unaware that he is a bad guy. He has his compatriots bring out the “present”—and Kobik is sucked into the containment field and trapped....

The mystery man who came to Avril Kincaid's help (in CAP: SAM #8) is revealed to be Wendell VaughnQuasar—and he presents Avril with the Quantum Bands....

Steve Rogers—young and powerful again—addresses the group of Avengers who have arrived in Pleasant Hill, asking them to put their differences aside and get back to “what we were called to do...Avengers ASSEMBLE!” As Zemo taunts the captive Maria Hill, the Avengers invade and the battle is joined. Soon Zemo calls on Graviton for help and he encases the villains in an impenetrable bubble that none of the heroes can break, not even Thor. Then Avril Kincaid enters and unleashes the power of the Quantum Bands and the force field is shattered...but the blast has had an unexpected side effect: it has knocked out the containment unit. In a second, a giant and very angry omnipotent four-year-old girl towers over the assembly. Winter Soldier aims a gun at her and is telekinetically tossed through a window. Both Baron Zemo and Erik Selvig try to appeal to her for their purposes and she tells them to go away—and they do, slowly fading from sight (and reappearing in the Himalayas). She then vanishes herself, leaving the rest to resume their battle. The Avengers quickly rout the villains, who, rushing to escape, run into SHIELD arriving with heavy weaponry. During the battle, Steve and Sam talk over the future of Captain America and decide they can both wield the shield. So the heroes are united...until, as Kincaid informs us, the war begins....

Maria Hill is called on the carpet by her superiors and she puts a positive spin on the debacle, arguing that everything has turned out for the best. The superiors disagree and announce a tribunal to investigate her actions as director of SHIELD....

During her defense we are given glimpses of where various players are now, setting up new comic book storylines:

Baron Zemo has made Erik Selvig his slave, intending to bend him to his will....

Steve Rogers has found Rick “Whisperer” Jones in hiding from SHIELD and offers him a job....

Wendell Vaughn starts training Avril Kincaid to be the new Quasar....

Kobik apologizes to Winter Soldier and asks if she can go with him, and she brings her friends (the new Thunderbolts)....

The Red Skull seizes control of the revived Hydra....
