Synopsis

Hulk and Thing: Hard Knocks #1 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 2.5 stars

At the Hard Rock Café, a tiny shack in the Southwestern desert, Bruce Banner is quietly having a cup of coffee when Ben Grimm, the Thing, arrives. He tells Banner they need to have a talk and hits him to bring out “the other guy.” Hulk (with a normal human intellect) sits down next to Thing, who prefaces his remarks with a little nostalgia. Ben tells Hulk about the Fantastic Four’s first meeting with Doctor Doom. Doom had sent Mr. Fantastic and Thing into the past to retrieve Blackbeard’s treasure and when they returned, Doom discovered he had been cheated, the treasure chest contained only iron chains. Thing fought Doom and tore off his head revealing Doom to be a robot double. At this point Hulk wonders whether Thing’s story has a point and Ben invites him to tell a story but before Hulk can say anything beyond, “Well….” Ben returns to his tale, revealing that the real Doom appeared to them over a comm device and mocked Ben, calling him a freak. Reed tried to comfort him as they left. Hulk has changed back to Banner at this point so Ben hits him again, bringing back the big Green Guy. Angered, Hulk smashes Thing through the wall and he lands near a little girl who offers him a lick of her lollipop. The girl’s parents arrive and the mom starts pleading with them not to hurt their daughter. Irritated, Ben hands the kid to her mom, who curses Hulk and Thing as monsters and freaks before they drive off. Thing puts on his hat and coat and departs; Bruce, calling himself a fool, follows him and find Ben waiting around the corner to resume his story. But Ben again hits Banner and now the Hulk is really angry….

Hulk and Thing: Hard Knocks #1 Review by (August 30, 2022)

Review: First impression: Man, that cover art is ugly. Second impression: the interior art is ugly too. If the art has to be this ugly, it’s appropriate that it’s used for Hulk and Thing, two guys who seem to be made out of construction materials and not for, say, Ant-Man and Wasp. So the plot proper has Thing and Hulk sitting around and bickering over whether Thing ever beat Hulk or not. The issues are padded out with flashbacks to a couple of early FF issues, redone in the same ugly style as the rest of the comics. The point seems to be the low point. Dragged out through four issues, the whole point is Thing thanking Hulk for inadvertently causing Ben to see himself, not as a monster, but as a man. This would be an impressive and moving character moment for Ben, if it weren’t that this is 2004 and this issue would have been handled ad infinitum in the 1960s and 70s. The climax has the army attacking Hulk for no clear reason other than that there needed to be some diversity in the action sequences. All of this adds up to a pointless curio though I’ve added half a star for some of the amusing banter (not to be confused with Dr. Bruce Banter) between the two antagonists.

Comments: Part of the Marvel Knights imprint according to the MK in the upper left corner of the cover; this does not appear on lists of Marvel Knights titles, though. The Marvel Chronology Project places this immediately after INCREDIBLE HULK (2000 series) #76. The FF’s first meeting with Doctor Doom was in FANTASTIC FOUR #5 from 1962. Revelation: Doctor Doom knows what a Hostess Twinkie is.
