Tales of the Marvels: Wonder Years #2 Review by (June 27, 2023)
Review: And things go heartbreaking, with a sad memorial for Simon that is moving regardless of how much (or even if) we read Wonder Man’s comic books. But Cindy is able to break though her delusion, recognize Bernie’s despair, and minister to her, shocking herself out of her own mental problems. Sometimes fans (which word really is short for “fanatics”) can be saved.

Comments: Tie-in to MARVELS. Book is part of the Marvel Select line with heavier covers and better production values than the usual comics. Wonder Man’s funeral took place in the backup story in FORCE WORKS #10; Simon returns in AVENGERS (1997 series) #11. Cindy Knutz returns in AVENGERS TWO: WONDER MAN AND BEAST #2-3. Mourners at Simon’s funeral include Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Cyclops, Vision, Spider-Man, Hercules, Spider-Woman (Julia Carpenter), Thunderstrike, Falcon, Thing, U.S. Agent, Crystal, Agatha Harkness, Quicksilver, Wasp, Living Lightning, Black Widow. Written by Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Tales of the Marvels: Wonder Years #2 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

In the days following the apparent death of Wonder Man, Cindy Knutz slowly convinces herself he’s coming back…for her. Looking out of the window, the curtain holing her rips and she falls—but Simon Williams is there to catch her…and confess his love for her. They kiss…and Cindy wakes up….

Cindy attends a meeting of the Wonder Man Fan Club and, as Bernie isn’t there, she is sked to describe the battle with the Kree where Wonder Man lost his life. She does so but reveals she is certain he is coming back, an attitude that confuses the other fans….

The media covers the hero’s death: sometime girlfriend Ginger Beach refuses to comment, Beast honors his good friend, fans gather at Simon’s home, Scarlet Witch addresses his fans. Cindy visits Bernie, who is wearing her red contacts permanently and wallowing in food and reruns of Simon’s movies. Cindy brings the news that two members of the Fan Club have been invited to Simon’s memorial and the Club decided it should be Cindy and Bernie. Cindy predicts that Simon will make a dramatic return at the service; Bernie gives Cindy her prized possession, an autographed lobby card and says, “All I wanna be is where he is….”

Cindy arrives at the memorial service and, walking in, she is stunned at all of the superheroes in attendance. Iron Man welcomes her and shows her to a seat beside Nick Fury. She sees Wanda arrive in mourning as though she doesn’t know Simon is about to make his comeback…and then she puts together Bernie’s absence and her last words…. Cindy dashes out of the service and takes a cab to Bernie’s apartment, arriving just in time to rush her to the hospital after her suicide attempt….

Cindy visits Bernie in the hospital, assuring her she didn’t miss anything at the memorial service. Later at night, Cindy goes to the cemetery and sits by the monument placed in Simon’s memory; she tells Simon they should see so much of one another, she has to get on with her life so she leaves Simon’s red shades on the stone and departs….
