1942: At Army Headquarters in New York, Faith Bradley is demanding the truth about her husband’s death, since the body sent her in a closed coffin was that of a white man. Storming out, she is followed by a black corporal, Eddie Himes, who tries to explain that the Army’s practice is that when soldiers are killed in an explosion, they divide up the remains so that each family can have satisfaction. Faith doens’ understand but accepts that Isaiah is dead.
Meanwhile in Germany, the band of black super-soldiers intercepts a German convoy and wipes out the Nazis, though Larsen is killed by a grenade. Examining the trucks the men discover that the Germans were delivering medical supplies, not weapons, to the front. Maurice agonizes over the horrors of war while Elias insists this is what they have to do if they want to see home again.
Sometime later, in Portugal, Isaiah reads about Captain America in a comic book and questions Sgt. Elias about its accuracy and the impending visit of a real Captain America. A bitter Maurice drops by to fill them in: after they do all the hard work, a white man in a flashy costume is being brought in to lead them for the publicity. A white lieutenant objects to Maurice’s cynicism and opines that black should not be allowed in the army. When Maurice demands to know what he’s going to do about it, Lt. Merritt informs him of his father’s shameful death (issue #3). Flying into a rage, Maurice punches the white man and Isaiah and Elias leap to stop him. After a violent struggle, Maurice kills Elias with a large rock, and Merritt responds by showing him what he can do—with a gun….
Reinstein reveals that the autopsies showed that the super-soldiers were suffering from exaggerated thyroids. Now, with Captain America delayed by a storm, Isaiah is ordered to take on the suicide mission alone. Later, Colonel Price is told that Isaiah Bradley has stolen the Captain America uniform to wear into battle….
Wearing the red-white-and-blue costume and wielding a shield, Isaiah parachutes behind enemy lines and heads for his objective: Schwarzebitte Concentration Camp…
