What If? World War Hulk #1 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

Hulk defeats Sentry so Reed Richards and Tony Stark activate satellite weapons in hope of destroying Hulk; they nuke most of Manhattan, killing many, including themselves. With most of the heroes gone, the Skrulls conquer Earth. Months later, Vision encounters Bruce Banner and persuades him to join a small group of survivors led by Wasp to fight back against the enemy Skrulls. Hulk inspires the people and brings all of the heroes out of hiding to join the resistance. The Skrulls then reveal that Wasp has been a Skrull spy from the beginning and she detonates an unstable genetic weapon inside Yellowjacket (Hank Pym), killing all of the heroes. Some time later, the Silver Surfer comes to Skrull-controlled Earth and finds Hulk the only human survivor; Hulk pleads with the Surfer to summon Galactus to devour Earth and bring justice. He does. Galactus destroys Earth, killing all the Skrulls and Hulk, with his memory erased, becomes Galactus’ new herald, the World-Breaker.

Synopsis: Post-Ragnarok, Dr. Donald Blake, having spent some time on a medical mission in Africa with his pals, the Warriors Three, innocently returns to America to find Hulk has returned and is preparing to punish the Illuminati for their (supposed) crimes against Hulk and Sakaar. Thor and Hulk fight while the Warriors Three battle Hulk’s Warbound. Thor’s and Hulk’s scrap is interrupted by a man asking them to rescue refugees trapped in a collapsing subway tunnel. The two superbeings call a truce, help the people, then work out a plan, as Thor understands what it’s like to lose a world and friends. So after Miek is exposed as the real bad guy, the Illuminati are put in charge of rebuilding New York, Thor and pals raise Asgard anew, and Hulk leads an expedition back to Sakaar to restore that planet to its glory days….

Review / Commentaries

What If? World War Hulk #1 Review by (July 27, 2021)

Review: Unhappy ending, happy ending, scattershot humor. Another fine What if? issue to add some added interest to the originals. The Thor tale is nicest because it brings some order out of chaos and it bucks the What If trend of making the alternate histories much darker and grimmer than the originals.
