Synopsis

Incredible Hulk: Blood Hunt #1 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

Fifty years ago, a terrified child ran into an Arizona town, screaming that his parents were now “underground…”

Today: Bruce Banner wanders into the deserted Arizona town, with the porcelain doll that contains the soul of his friend Charlie. Bruce enters the saloon and is startled by an old man named Miguel. Miguel tells him that the town is a fake, built decades ago for shooting Western movies. The place is deserted because the sun has turned dark and the residents all fled. Bruce asks why then Miguel is still here. Miguel responds with his story. Fifty years ago, he and his parents climbed over the wall, entering the country from Mexico, seeking a better life. While crossing the desert, vampires burst up from the ground, attacking the group and dragging them underground to feast on; Miguel was the only survivor. He then apologizes to Bruce—because the monsters are already there. They burst up through the floor, dragging Bruce down into the pit where they tear his chest open to eat. Bruce pleads with the Hulk to come to his rescue and then the transformation begins. The Hulk tears into the vampires then breaks through to the surface; he tears up two wooden poles and stakes as many of the monsters as he can. The last one he nails to a wall turns out to be Miguel’s mother; she asks how her son is and Hulk replies, “How should I know?” As he walks out of the town, Miguel recovers the religious medal his mother wore….

Incredible Hulk: Blood Hunt #1 Review by (July 10, 2024)

Review: Decent tie-in to the BLOOD HUNT event doesn’t contain anything to further the larger plot but echoes the Hulk’s ongoing series. There’s a nice use of an offbeat setting, a movie location but the bulk of the tale is Hulk smashing monsters. And less complicated monsters than usual. These are vampires, they want to eat people, they die by being staked through the heart. Hulk knows what to do and does it. Nice exciting actions scenes but unnecessary for following the main event--or vice versa.

Comments: Tie-in to the vampire-centric BLOOD HUNT event. Story falls between INCREDIBLE HULK #13 and 14. Issue includes a tribute to the late penciller Don Perlin, co-creator of Moon Knight and Tigra, also known for THE DEFENDERS, GHOST RIDER, and WEREWOLF BY NIGHT.
