Avengers / Invaders #5 Review by (October 19, 2013)
Review: So Bucky Cap offers Bucky Bucky a lot of warnings that are just oblique enough that when the time comes he won’t recognize them as warnings….”I’ve got a plan! Jump!” “There’s more to the plan, right?”…Does Spider-Man do anything in this story but make stupid jokes—and how does Echo read Ronin’s lips when he’s masked and standing beside her… “Cap, if we don’t get you back to your own time, the Nazis win the war!” Really, that’s all Iron Man needed to say to make the situation clear. Instead he opts for, “I’m so ashamed of myself and the world we’ve made!” Cap understands (liar) and offers his condolences, showing his potential as a pop psychologist (someday chanting “It’s not your fault” until Matt Damon cries)…Logan lectures Toro on mutant persecution while showing off with his claws—stuff Toro does not need to know but the 100+ year old Wolvie is apparently still trying to deal with…Spider-Man still does nothing but make lame jokes…Torch asserts that the LMDs have rights, after all Machines are people too—there’s really no difference between sending robots into dangerous situations and exterminating Jews! It’s another Holocaust! But then if machines are people, people are just machines, which is the attitude that started the whole tragedy in the first place. I can’t believe Marvel published this….

Comments: No inkers are credited for the series.

Avengers / Invaders #5 Review by (October 19, 2013)
This is officially the start of Act 2, and the change is signalled here mainly by the 3-way Invaders/Mighty Avengers/New Avengers conflict ending.

Dr Strange especially wanted Bucky and Namor to be rescued, because they are still alive now and this will help him pinpoint the exact moment they were abducted from 1943. But he can make do with Bucky alone. In the heat of the moment neither Human Torch nor Toro realise this means that they and Captain America *aren't* alive now.

There's a big error in the plot here. Torch remembers discovering the Auschwitz concentration camp in 1945. But the Invaders have been brought through time from 1943, so that hasn't happened to him yet.

Bucky-Cap bows out for an issue to return in #7.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Avengers / Invaders #5 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

At the cemetery where his wartime comrades are buried, the time-displaced Paul Anselm wishes he could change history….

Aboard the SHIELD Helicarrier, the Invaders and the New Avengers are locked in combat with Tony Stark’s Mighty Avengers, while the modern Captain America tries to warn his younger self, Bucky Barnes, about the fate that awaits him in 1945. SHIELD ESPers are preventing Dr. Strange from teleporting his allies from the deck so the heroes leap overboard to be snatched out of the air—but original Captain America and the Sub-Mariner are recaptured. Back at the Sanctum Sanctorum, the Invaders see the Gulf of Time, held at bay by Strange. Their new mission: find the Cosmic Cube and set things back to normal….

Back on the Helicarrier, Iron Man finally has the opportunity to explain the situation to a bound Cap. Consumed by guilt over his part in Steve’s death however, he makes a poor job of it, but Cap believes him when he says that the Invaders cannot be allowed to see much of the modern world…

At the Sanctum Sanctorum, Wolverine detects that Toro is a mutant and lectures him on the oppression that they face in the modern world—and the Human Torch compares them to the Life Model Decoys—which Logan disputes. The presence of Bucky allows Dr. Strange to see the exact moment of the rift in time—and they learn that another person came through with them. Meanwhile, and angry Torch zooms off, his mind racing back to the War when he liberated a concentration camp and discovered that the Nazis were exterminating Jews—and wondered if his creator Professor Horton, himself Jewish, intended that. Torch arrives at the Helicarrier and announces that he is there to liberate the LMDs from their oppression by humans—and below, the minions of the sinister mastermind behind the Torch’s manipulation ready a hidden army of LMDs for action….
