Captain America: Living Legend #2 Review by (November 2, 2013)
Review: Here we are at issue 2 of this long a-borning miniseries. The art: Agustin Alessio takes over from Adi Granov with this issue. His realistic style is similar though looks more sketched than painted. His pale and dreary art perfectly captures the mood of this grim story but it isn’t much fun to look at. The story: Still more hints than plot though Cap is presented as a calm and able leader. Then he fights a giant metal monster. Moderately cool. Best part: Cap cuts off what promised to be a shrill political lecture when Lauren Fox discovers her military backing. Thanks, Cap! Wait, what does the solicit say? “Captain America's mission is to find the survivors and bring them back alive - or silence them forever.” Cap is on a mission to assassinate inured scientists? I don’t think so.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Captain America: Living Legend #2 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

In Siberia a Russian military unit hurries to the crash site of the fallen D.E.U.S. space lab and is surprised to find no one at the old rocket launching area. Captain America is on his way down from the Helicarrier when a signal jams his comm link with Sharon Carter and disables the engines of his landing craft. Against her advice he leaps out and uses a gravity grip to drop ten miles to the ground in a snowstorm….

1968: The Soviet mission to the moon goes sour when Commander Volkov, an odd energy trace coming from his eyes, opens the hatch allowing his two comrades to be sucked out into space….

Now: Dr Lauren Fox, designer of the D.E.U.S. project, emerges from an escape pod and is found by Cap who must keep her alive and out of the hands of the Russians….

1968: Russian soldiers, searching for the returned space capsule discover a horribly mutilated farmer. Nearby they discover the vehicle; inside a zombie-like Volkov kills them without laying a finger on them….

Cap and Dr. Fox come upon the launch facility.; Cap informs Dr. Fox that her cheap energy research project was secretly funded by the defense agency who was planning to turn it into a weapon. And now Cap must keep it out of the hands of the Russians. Entering the facility, they come upon the remains of the military unit, man and metal all fused together in a heap. As they watch, the wreckage reforms itself in a giant monster which attacks them, using the guns embedded in its body to fire on Cap. The hero hurls his shield and detonates some explosives also welded into its skeleton and it is destroyed. Meanwhile, in the missile silo beneath the wreckage of the space station, Volkov is waiting for Captain America….
