To Save the Eternals

Synopsis

The Avengers #248 synopsis by T Vernon
Rating: 4 stars
Seeing their fellow Avengers in trouble, Vision and Scarlet Witch take a Quinjet to Olympia; Wanda remains in the jet, researching their foe, Maelstrom. Vision startles her and her recent resentment over her husband’s actions comes pouring out; he apologizes and assures her he will do better but she doesn’t see the sinister look on his face….

In the city square, Maelstrom tells the captive Wasp his plan to siphon off the energy of the EternalsUni-Mind, killing them all and boosting his own power. As the power drain begins, he adds that he also wants revenge against the imprisoned Deviants, his mother’s people who rejected them. Vision attacks the baddie from behind but the energy discharge knocks him unconscious. Maelstrom spies his confederate Deathurge atop a high tower but the creature resents being treated as a lackey. Wanda casts a hex to try to bring the Uni-Mind together but the bond is broken and the Eternals return to their separate selves. Captain Marvel awakens and bursts the leech manacles dampening her and Wasp’s power. Vision attacks Maelstrom, having discovered the villain is vulnerable to non-kinetic energy. Unaware of this, Starfox attacks but Maelstrom is able to turn his kinetic energy against him and throw him at Vision. Ikaris, Makkari, and Thena attack the villain at once and are hurled away. Cap M bombards the baddie with infrared heat and microwaves which hurt. Wasp’s stings are effective from a distance. Starfox uses his pleasure power to persuade him to surrender. Wanda hits him with another hex. Maelstrom, feeling his power diminishing, calls to Deathurge for help. The latter hurls his ebon spear and pierces Maelstrom’s chest, killing him and turning his body black. Cap M tries to capture Deathurge but he turns intangible and sinks into the earth; Cap M pursues but loses him underground….

The majority of the Eternals plan to leave Earth to find their destiny in space. A small number will remain behind, including Ikaris, Makkari, Thena, and Sersi. The rest reform the Uni-Mind and ascend, taking the cube that contains the imprisoned Deviants. The Avengers go home….

In a secret subterranean lair, Deathurge plans to restore Maelstrom in a new body….

Review / Commentaries

The Avengers #248 Review by (April 14, 2023)
Comments: Cover title: The Mighty Avengers, on issues #241-255. Part three of three parts. Maelstrom returns next issue. Pencils and inks credited to Joe Sinnott and “Crew,” the latter unidentified.

Review: A villain tries to capture the Uni-Mind, the heroes stop him. Pretty brief summary. But a villain who can hold off all the heroes is always a cool thing, even when he is as colorless as Maelstrom. The coolest part of the epic is the reforming of the Uni-Mind and the departure from Earth. This bit, like its first forming in the previous issue, has a nice Kirbyesque feel to it. And the bad guy will pop up again sooner than expected.
