Rescued from Russia (last issue, TIH2-166), Thunderbolt Ross arrives at JFK, undercover in civilian clothes. A joyful reunion with Betty Ross follows, but she learns that her husband Glenn Talbot died during a rescue mission and such makes her upset. Note: Actually, Talbot is alive, just injured, also last issue).
Such tragic news cause Betty to suffer a fit of rage, hitting her father on the face, blaming him for everything. Soon after, she passes away in shock in the arms of Colonel John Armbruster. They hospitalize Betty for her wellbeing.
A secret agent from A.I.M. (Advanced Idea Mechanics) witnessed it all, and informs MODOK, the organization’s leader, who devises a plan involving Betty to destroy his unbeatable enemy: The Hulk!
Meanwhile, Jim Wilson has found the Hulk, who finally calms down after several days and turns into Bruce Banner. Jim tells his friend about Betty’s breakdown. Feeling guilty, Banner goes to see her at the hospital. But she’s very unhappy to see Banner, yelling “I HATE YOU” while blasting her arms onto him. Unfortunately, the transformation into the Hulk occurs!
But the green monster soon realizes that Betty is right and leaves in angst. A nurse, an agent of A.I.M., informs what happened to MODOK. Using a giant robotic armor, the villain goes to the hospital at night and hypnotizes Betty in her weak state to merge her hatred against the Hulk.
Several miles away, our favorite green-skinned goliath meditates on what just happened and picks up flowers to make Betty “like” him again. As he returns to the sanatorium, he finds MODOK in his gigantic armor, and the logical battle follows!
At first, MODOK is confident in the power of his armor. But eventually, Hulk proves once more why he’s the strongest one there is!
Defeated in hand combat, MODOK flies away, thrilled because the “instrument of his revenge is already preparing itself!”
