A Game Of Monsters And Kings

Synopsis

The Incredible Hulk Annual #9 synopsis by Rich Cincinelli
Rating: 3 stars
Our story opens on a group of wealthy bored industrialists I'll call "The Gotham Club" who set out to engage the Hulk in an effort to regain their former glory of "the war days". The Gotham Club each taking a round with the Hulk employ a variety of ploys to subdue the monster including a high tech helicopter, a tank, an armored car, a fiery trap set in the sewers and a PT boat. After these failed attempts, a weary Dr. Bruce Banner overhears Det. Wade, who has been tracking these events, and sets out to confront Charles Rigel, the ring leader of the Gotham Club. Banner pleads with Rigel to stop his mad quest, but Rigel fires on Banner triggering the transformation into the Hulk. Rigel then unleashes his master plan: A set of robots modeled after chess pieces (Pawn, Rook, Knight, Bishop, Queen and King). The Hulk makes short work out of these robots while New York's finest led by Det. Wade close in on the sight of the battle.

Rigel distraught by his defeat at the hands of the Hulk, lashes out at the jade giant with his bare fists! The Hulk laughs at this and grabs Rigel to crush him when Det. Wade arrives and pleads with the Hulk to release Rigel. The Hulk complies after having a vision of Banner's memory of Det. Wade stating "The Hulk is a mere pawn... Completely innocent." Our big green buddy then leaps of into the Manhattan skyline.
