America Chavez: Made In The USA (2021 series) #4

America Chavez has been told, by a younger sister Catalina who she didn't believe existed, that her memory of the otherdimensional Utopian Parallel was false and that she was born on Earth and taken by her mothers, who both versions agree were named Amalia and Elena Chavez, to an island near Long Island called the UP. Cata said that they both suffered from an Edges Disease which was fatal, and the billionaire island owner Gales was searching for a cure which the doctor moms could help with. The disease only affected girls and he had many such little girls to experiment on that he calls Starlings. But it became clear that his motives were far from pure, especially after some children especially America started gaining powers. So the 2 moms decided to escape from the island with all the children.

We of course saw the past in flashbacks. Initially depicting Cata's explanation. But near the end of last issue America took a drug to unlock her buried memories, and now the flashbacks are from what she finds.

Elena has picked up their 2 daughters while Amalia has rounded up the other girls. The kids are all dressed in their  identical 'superhero costumes'. But Amalia has left them to lay a false trail for the security cameras, and the guards are chasing her. She tells Elena to get the girls away while she throws a grenade to blow up the chamber that contains the magic-looking UP environment. It causes a really big explosion which kills her.

We learn that the moms had drugged Gales with a sedative and  hacked the security system. But Gales is awake with more goons and they threaten Elena. He shoots her, but as she lies dying she urges the Starlings to rise up and use their powers. They proceed to overwhelm the men and beat them up. She tells America to use her teleportation power to get away with Catalina. Anerica creates 1 of her star-shaped portal to jump through. But as she leaps Gales snatches Cata away from her grasp. America winds up in the ocean until she finds a piece of floating debris to sit on. (Which is where her adoptive Santana family found her in #1.)

Now we're back in the present-day but now America knows the truth. But she also learned last issue that Catalina is as much the mad scientist as Gales. The preventative cure that they were given on the island is starting to fail. An early sign is that their powers are starting to fade, but eventually Edges will kill them. Cata has lots of Edges girls in pods on the island and is searching for her own cure. Last issue America 'ported her to New Jersey to get her out of the way. Now she's waking all the girls to save them like her moms did. But her sister returns to stop her. And to force America to help she's brought along her adoptive brother Alberto Santana.
