Synopsis

Annihilation: Silver Surfer (2006 series) #4 synopsis by reviewer Rob Johnson
Rating: 4 stars

The Annihilation Wave has struck from the Negative Zone and is spreading devastation through the galaxies. In particular Annihilus has deployed Ravenous with his Seekers and their Currs to capture (ex-)Heralds Of Galactus so that he can harvest their Power Cosmic. Galactus called Silver Surfer to him in the Deada'an system on the border between Badoon and Skrull territory (in the Milky Way galaxy) and asked him to take up the mantle of Herald again. Norrin Radd accepted and Big G restored his full might that he had before SS rebelled (Fantastic Four #49). Just in time to destroy an approaching AW fleet including Ravenous & co.

Now, still in Annihilation Day + 21, he surveys the death and destruction he has caused. But Ravenous and his Curr have survived, and he brazenly asks Surfer to surrender. He points out that his Negative Zone 'Opposing Force' is still the equal of the Power Cosmic. They meet in a comic clash that renders the destruction around them even more destroyed. Ravenous separates SS from his Cosmic Surfboard but then finds he can't let go as it flies off with him. But Galactus isn't satisfied and wants the foe dead so Norrin creates a new Board to follow with.

The trail ends 3 hours later on a Badoon fringe world Thruitda where Ravenous, Curr and Surfboard crashland, and the Board appears to disintegrate. Surfer arrives and advises the enemy to return to the Neg Zone but Ravenous restarts their battle. Mighty blows and blasts are exchanged. The Curr tries to bite our hero but SS blasts it, severing its link to its master. Then the 2 mighty warriors fight hand to hand amid coruscating energy until a final explosion leaves Ravenous clinging to a small chunk of debris. Radd calls his Surfboard to him and leaves the foe to contemplate his thorough defeat.

He flies back to Galactus who is displeased that his enemy isn't dead. Surfer replies that he once again serves his master but he's not a killer. So now Big G sends him to find him a planet to feed on. Silver Surfer leaves, glad that his life once more has purpose, but determined to keep him away from populated worlds, and also away from Annihilus.

This issue has an epilogue set later on A-Day + 40.

The destruction of the Kyln maximum security intergalactic prison let loose 2 giant ancient beings Aegis and Tenebrous who claim that Galactus imprisoned them there aeons ago and they want revenge. Last issue Thanos sent the Fallen One, G's 1st Herald, there to check on something else but A&T recognised his Power Cosmic. But they were astonished to find that someone called Thanos Of Titan had been able to gain control of the FO.

Now on an unaffiliated colony world Harborage Minor the duo are unhappy about the lack of purpose or meaning in this chaotic universe. Then Thanos and his tiny elfin companion Skreet join them. Skreet recognises the pair and calls them Proemial Elders, much worse than Galactus. They in turn recognise her as a Chaos Mite, firstborn of the creation event, and ask her how she survived the Purge. She refuses to say in case she needs the same trick again. The Titan understands the term Proemial to mean 'serving to make ready for that which follows' and that therefore they weren't meant to last this long. They return the dead body of the Fallen One to its master now that it has served its purpose of luring him here. They ask if Thanos serves Galactus which he denies. And they sense another mistress (Death). All agree that they each seek Galactus, and Thanos proposes an alliance.

Annihilation: Silver Surfer (2006 series) #4 Review by (May 16, 2026)
I don't think it's been stated before that Silver Surfer's Power Cosmic was reduced after he stopped being Herald Of Galactus, especially after he escaped confinement to Earth.

This is the 1st time we've heard the terms Proemial Elders (or Gods) and Chaos Mites (or Sprites). We'll learn more about their origins in the deep past of the universe in Annihilation: Heralds Of Galactus #2.

But before that Big G notes the awakening of the Dreaming Celestial in Eternals (2006) #6. And then a flashback in Annihilation #1 shows how Thanos & Skreet team up with Aegis & Tenebrous to take down Galactus and Silver Surfer. A&T then go on to A:HOG#2 above while the other 4 continue into the main mini-series. Ravenous goes straight there.
Last issue Thanos made an alliance with Annihilus (or at least pretended to). The Ann#1 flashback will claim that Thanos' alliance with the Proemial Gods against Galactus was part of his deal with Annihilus.

The Fallen One is definitely dead but the 2020 Yondu mini-series will reveal that Thanos gets the Asgardian Dwarves of Nidavellir to cremate the body and transfer the Power Cosmic with the ashes into an urn. But he dies in the current event before he can make use of it.

This issue also contains Nova Corps database files on Firelord and Stardust, even though they're not in this issue. It claims that Stardust goes above and beyond in her Herald duties. After giving Galactus a world to feed on she seeks out any survivors and kills them and wipes out all traces of their civilisation.
