Annihilation: Super-Skrull (2006 series) #1 synopsis by reviewer Rob Johnson
Rating: 4 stars

It's Annihilation Day + 41 and the Annihilation Wave forces have reached the planet Aks'lo in Skrull System 004 in the Andromeda Galaxy. Super-Skrull's voiceover tells us that this remote world was a wildlife sanctuary for the Skrull Empress. Now Admiral Salo sends in ground troops to destroy any missile bases before he deploys the Harvester Of Sorrow. Those forces report back that the planet appears to be deserted. But it turns out that some of the vegetation is actually shapeshifted Skrull warriors who mount a surprise attack. But they're vastly outnumbered.

SS tells us that he's followed the Wave across his home galaxy, fighting them on world after world with the combined powers of the Fantastic Four given to him by Skrull scientists (way back in #18 of the original FF series). His fearsome reputation has been enhanced by the viciously cunning ways he employs those talents. As now when he uses Mr Fantastic's malleability to extend 1 arm as a fine wire and Thing's strength to whip it through multiple bodies, cutting them in half. Human Torch's flames start troop carriers and troops burning, and Thing's fist at the end of MrF's arm smashes through others. But still the bugs keep coming.

Satisfied that there are only ground defences Salo orders his troops to evacuate the planet before he commits the Harvester. Kl'rt knows what's coming and heads out into space from where he watches the huge machine break the whole planet apart so that it can be turned into raw materials to 'feed' the Wave.

On A-Day + 47 he's reached the command cruiser of the warlord Baroness S'Bak. He tells her what's happening and that the Harvester Of Sorrow is heading towards the centre of what was the Skrull Empire. He asks her to mount an offensive against it but she declines. There is no known way to destroy the Harvester and such an expedition would leave her sector open to takeover by a rival warlord. SS lessens his request to a small force that he can lead against it, but she says no-one will follow an ageing warrior with his record of defeats (by Marvel heroes like the FF). He snaps and attacks her and then leaves (with a bunch of weapons presumably taken from her guards). He starts to shoot his way off the ship but gets surrounded. So he drops the weapons and goes Super-Skrull on them to get out into space. S'Bak sends Warbird ships to kill him. But a star-drive shuttle zooms through them, snags him with a grapple and pulls him aboard and then zooms away with him.

His rescuer is a young Skrull named R'kin whose father General N'ala fought with Super-Skrull against the Kree at the battle of Harkoon. He's a lowly mechanic in the fleet but he idolises Kl'rt and dreamt of fighting by his side. SS can't quite believe this. Then they see a broadcast message branding Kl'rt as a traitor to the Empire and placing a very large bounty on his head. SS reveals that he has a personal stake in this because he must stop the Wave before it reaches the planet Zaragz'na where his son lives. But he now doesn't expect to get any support from other Skrulls so he intends to go to the Negative Zone where the Annihilation Wave originates and seek rebels there.

Kl'rt's voiceover tells us there are only 2 ways he knows of to get to the NZ. 1 is to go all the way through hostile territory to the place that the AW came through, the Crunch at the 'edge of the expanding universe' (as seen in Ann: Prologue). The other is to ask the help of his sworn enemy Reed Richards, so that's what he does.

We next see the 2 Skrulls discovered in the FF's Baxter Building HQ by Mr Fantastic. MrF quickly locks the door and aims an enormous Class 4 Disintegrator at Super-Skrull, but doesn't fire it because he can tell he's here to talk. Off-panel he explains what's going on and what he wants to do about it. Reed isn't too hopeful that it will work, but Kl'rt points out that he wins either way. If he fails then the FF will be rid of 1 enemy, but if it works then he will be rid of a menace that would eventually reach Earth. Reed expresses concern about young R'kin, but SS persuades him that as a shapeshifter R'kin is older than he looks.

And the duo pass through the Negative Zone portal and into next issue.

Annihilation: Super-Skrull (2006 series) #1 Review by (May 22, 2026)
This series is part of the Annihilation event.

Super-Skrull is here after his brief app in Annihilation: Prologue where he learned of the Harvester Of Sorrow threatening the Skrull Empire.

The opening date Annihilation Day + 41 is 1 day after the epilogue in Ann: Silver Surfer #4.

The Skrull Empire was shattered after Galactus devoured the throneworld Tarnax IV and destroyed the Imperial starfleet in Fantastic Four #257. Ever since then they've suffered the rise and fall of competing warlords.

The Marvel Chronology Project has this event overlapping the 1st Marvel Civil War. As such Mr Fantastic's app here (the only 1 in the event) occurs between CW#1 and CW#2, with an app in Agents Of Atlas #2 before CW#2.

This issue includes entries from the Nova Corps Database on the Skrull Empire and Super-Skrull.
