Avengers #64 Review by (January 6, 2023)
This is part 4 of the Avengers Assemble crossover.

We saw Doom The Living Planet and the alternate Dooms in Avengers Forever #5 where we learned that Doom Supreme's been collecting the Dr Dooms (many of them not human) from each planet the Multiversal Masters Of Evil conquer and bending them to his will.

The crossover will continue in AvF #13 before returning for next issue.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Avengers #64 Synopsis by Rob Johnson
The Avengers and the 1M BC Avengers are still battling the Multiversal Masters Of Evil. Tony Stark's voiceover tells us they've been at it for 9 days and the conflict has been causing worldwide disasters. Starbrand of the Avengers was out of action from the start because she was prematurely aged getting them back to the prehistoric past (#61). The prehistoric Avengers lost their Starbrand (Av Assemble Alpha) and Ghost Rider (last issue). The MMOE lost Ghost Goblin plus Dark Phoenix's hound Logan (last issue).

Now Iron Man grabs King Killmonger and absorbs the blast from the faceplate of his Asgardian Destroyer armour to give time for Captain Marvel, Odin and Thor to attack together. They destroy the faceplate but Killmonger strikes back with his axe. However the 1M BC Iron Fist takes over the fight with her powerful blows until the foe collapses. But then she walks away from the conflict.

IM then hears a voice calling him from a cave, and inside he finds the Iron Inquisitor armour strewn about and its occupant an alternative reality version of his father Howard Stark. Howard admits that he sold his soul to Mephisto who then sent him as II to kill his 'son'. The devil fears Tony because they are similar. But now Howard offers *Tony* a deal. Together they can take the future of this world away from the super beings and rule it as a Stark dynasty. Tony refuses the offer but steps amongst the II armour which emits an EMP that deactivates *his* armour leaving him to fight his 'father' with fists.

Outside Nighthawk and the 1M BC Moon Knight attack Black Skull. Johann Shmidt surrenders control to his Venom symbiote but Captain America joins the fight. While the 3 heroes hold the villain down Agamotto sends the Fire Bands Of Malagoom which drive the symbiote to leave its host and coalesce around Kid Thanos. Shmidt was fuelled by race hatred but KT just wants *everyone* to die. And he remains triumphant even when CM, Odin and Thor plus Sub-Mariner join the fray.

Back in the cave Tony and Howard keep punching each other.

Elsewhere Phoenix (Maya Lopez) and Valkyrie (Jane Foster) have cornered Dark Phoenix. They stab and hack at her but she repulses them. However our Phoenix calls through time and draws power from others they have met in their recent travels. Sgt Szardos in 1943. Reno Phoenix and the Starbrand Kid in 1868. The Ghost Ronin in 1655. The original dinosaur Starbrand in 66M BC. All these willingly lend her their aid as she blasts DP into submission.

Meanwhile the other assembled heroes have Kid Thanos on the ropes. Namor pulls some of the symbiote away from its host and the 2 versions of Mjolnir wielded by Odin and Thor pin that to the ground as Kid T crawls out of it. Maya Lopez administers the coup-de-grace with Phoenix Fire but Thanos escapes. The heroes wonder what happened to Dark Phoenix as Iron Man joins them to search for her. But then Nighthawk queries when IM joined them. However 'Stark' has already slipped away and morphs into DP. And we learn that she is an alternate Mystique, the mutant shapechanger. So the Avengers change tack to find Tony Stark himself.

The real Tony's still in the cave. He's regained his own armour and now destroys that of the Iron Inquisitor. Howard jibes that he doesn't have the guts to kill him. But instead Tony cripples his hands so he won't be able to recreate the armour. He leaves him in the cave to survive for as long as Mephisto's magic sustains him, to watch the world evolve out of his control.

Meanwhile Dark Mystique has found the MMOE leader Doom Supreme who's been keeping out of the fight. She blasts him with Phoenix Fire but learns that he's merely a hologram. And she realises that this battle was merely a distraction while Doom attains his own true goal.

And we see Doom Supreme at the head of an army of alternate Dooms on Doom The Living Planet.
