Synopsis

Avengers (2023 series) #35 synopsis by reviewer Rob Johnson
Rating: 5 stars

Kang/Myrddin found his goal the Grail in the ruins of the Secret Wars' Battleworld. The Avengers and Hyperion have tracked him there alongside his erstwhile warriors the Twilight Court. Last issue the Avengers persuaded the Grail that they were more worthy of it than Kang. But they're too late because it is activated and soon it will destroy the current (8th) Cosmos that they are in to create a new 1. And only 1 person can (like Galactus) pass through into that Cosmos. But who will it be?

Currently Captain Marvel holds the Grail. Iron Man asks if they could blow it up but the witch Mordred says not. Artur asks if the process can be stopped or reversed. Black Panther says anything's possible but this device was subconsciously created by the genius of Reed Richards, and they wouldn't know where to start. Impatient Lancelot reminds them they're running out of time. Logical Vision says the only option left is to remove it from the multiverse. Kang objects that that's impossible, but Captain America (Sam Wilson) says that the impossible is what people like them do all the time.

They devise a plan and split into subteams to implement it.

The Avengers' orbital HQ the Impossible City is here too. It has regained its memory and its original name Camelot. The Technical group (Bedivere, Black Panther, Iron Man and Vision) are working in it They comment that Artur has resigned as King of the Twilight Court while King T'Challa of Wakanda isn't king of the Avengers because they don't have such. Apparently there was some argument between the 2 which Panther claims to have won. But whatever that was Tony Stark tells the Powerhouse group that they have now used Camelot's computer system to complete the necessary calculations.

That group comprises CM, Lancelot and Storm. There is some competitiveness between the 1st 2, the Stars in their respective teams. Storm calls them to order and they combine their energy powers and notify the Lightning Rod group to prepare to receive it all.

Artur, protected by the Armour Of Chthon, is the Lightning Rod supported by Mordred and Scarlet Witch. The combined blast hits him and the witches cast spells of entropy and possibility respectively. Coruscating with power Artur marches towards the Openers group ...

... Bercilak, Captain America (in armour), Galehaut and Parsifal. Mortal Cap and god Galehaut jointly accept the power/spell that Artur brings. Android Bercilak uses it to open a portal with Parsifal's hand on his shoulder. Parsifal the perfect knight who brings victory as long as his cause is just. The portal stabilises and T'Challa is teleported there by Camelot. He carries the Grail and will be the 1 who takes it through even though he knows there is no returning.

But the 5 are struck down by a blast. 4 of the Ashen Combine (Citysmith, Idol Alabaster, Lord Ennui and The Dead) are free from their prison in the Impossible City. (Meridian Diadem is presumably out of action due to the rebellion within her fomented by BP in #19-27.) Citysmith senses the power in the Grail and grabs it. The rest of the Avengers and Twilight Court turn up but only in time to see the Combine take the Grail through the portal which then closes.

Camelot tells the heroes that it set the villains free and let them take the Grail to save T'Challa. It reminds them that the plan was to send the Grail to a no-place/no-time where there was nothing of prior existence to be destroyed when the Grail went off. We see the Combine there realising that there are no cities there for them  to conquer and destroy. And they don't know what the Grail is doing or how to stop it. We learn that they are in the void before the 1st Firmament, and when the Grail does its stuff it creates that 1st Cosmos.

Avengers (2023 series) #35 Review by (February 6, 2026)
This issue's single cover is a continuation of last issue's double cover, and will itself be continued into next issue's cover which will I believe also be double. The complete picture should include every Avenger ever.

Hyperion is present in the opening pages but doesn't take part in the action.

And this issue ends with the greatest temporal paradox of all as the Grail creates the 1st of the sequence of Cosmos's that constitute the Marvel hyperverse (1 up from a multiverse). Maybe the taint of the Ashen Combine explains why the singular 1st Firmament was a 'bad guy'.

But how can the last issue of this series that follows top that?!
