Synopsis

Avengers and X-Men: Axis #6 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 3 stars

The X-Men led by Apocalypse have established a mutant nation in Manhattan and issue a warning to the humans who would interfere with them. They are building a Gene Bomb which would kill all the humans. Mystique enters the perimeter wanting to talk; Apocalypse sendsher children Nightcrawler and Rogue to meet her. They mock her peaceful overtures and Rogue lifts her high in the air and drops her. Mystique is caught by the heroic Sabretooth and they vanish into the old Morlock tunnels….

In his new corporate headquarters in San Francisco, Tony Stark is throwing an unending party while celebrating the wealth that has come from selling the Extremis App to all who were hooked on the free samples (issue #4). Daredevil arrives to shut down the hard-drinking Tony’s operation; Tony has the Iron Man armor attack DD which ends with the hero being tossed from the top of the mansion….

In Latveria, Doctor Doom proclaims that his nation will now be a democracy. His speech is interrupted by the Scarlet Witch, seeking vengeance for all his crimes against her. She continues to blast him until Magneto and Quicksilver arrive to rescue the ex-villain and the battle is on….

In Las Vegas, Thor is gambling with money openly stolen from the casino’s safe in a series of games the staff is cowed into letting him win. Loki arrives to try to persuade Thor to quit before he completely tarnishes his reputation so Thor slugs him. Loki pleads brotherly love as the reason for his concern and the ex-God of Thunder hurls him outside to deliver a beating—and Loki is snatched away by Spider-Man’s webbing shot from a Quinjet and taken back to New York….

At Avengers Mansion, Spidey and Loki join Steve Rogers and Nomad; Steve announces his plan to reverse the inversion: he has assembled a team of former villains to become the new Avengers. Sabretooth informs them that the X-Men’s Gene Bomb will be detonated in one hour….

Review / Commentaries

Avengers and X-Men: Axis #6 Review by (November 22, 2014)
Review: Two-thirds of the way through and this Mega-Event still seems like an overlong WHAT IF? from the 80s (“What if the Bad Guys Were Good and the Good Guys were Bad!”). This episodic issue seems to be a sampling of confrontations between inverted heroes and villains. The problem is that there is no room for any real characterization: the new baddies are really, really bad. This isn’t an event, it’s a round of Opposite Day, that silly kid’s game. The big unanswered question: did the humans actually manage to evacuate Manhattan in the three hour deadline imposed by Apocalypse at the end of issue #5? We don’t know because that major altercation took place in the dark space between the issues. I hope this gets better rather than just setting up the next event TIME RUNS OUT. Unfortunately, with only three issues to go, time is running out….

Avengers and X-Men: Axis #6 Review by (November 28, 2014)
AXIS: REVOLUTIONS #2 Sabretooth fights Nightcrawler, probably before their appearance in Axis#6. And Thor goes on a drumken tour of the US, leading directly to the Las Vegas app in this issue. LOKI: AGENT OF ASGARD #8 Loki and Enchantress explain to everyone why they're good now. And Loki goes to Las Vegas for his meet with brother Thor in Axis#6. (And of course Enchantress is in the ending of this issue too.) AXIS: CARNAGE #2 Carnage continues to be heroic in his own twisted way, the new Sin-Eater continues to lurk, and we (maybe) see the death of fake Sin-Eater Emil Gregg. Probably the whole of this mini-series will happen before he turns up for the end of this issue.

Tie-ins:- MAGNETO #12 is set at the end of Axis#3 - the rest of the tie-ins are in the follow-on inversion period. We see the action of #3 from Magneto's POV, and then he gets a psychic message from the remains of Charles Xavier's mind within Red Skull. DEADPOOL #37 The inverted non-violent (or not-so-violent) Zenpool continues to follow his own plotlines, 1 of which leads him into conflict with the now-evil X-Men - to be continued next issue. DP is the only starring character in this list who doesn't appear in Axis#6. AVENGERS WORLD #15 Dr Doom, Phil Coulson and Valeria Richards recruit 3D-Man, Elsa Bloodstone, Stingray, US Agent and Valkyrie to help for when Scarlet Witch attacks, leading in to the scene in this issue.

This issue is largely made up of links to tie-ins, including to the upcoming Superior Iron Man #2. The IM appearance clashes with the claim in SIM#1 that the SIM title is set after the end of the Axis event. But because of when I'm writing this I already know SIM#2 agrees with this issue rather than its own predecessor.
