Synopsis

Daredevil (1964 series) #216 synopsis by reviewer Anthony Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

After having mutilated his own face in the prison laundry room, the Gael is transported to a hospital that can better treat him. The Gael is checked out, then he quickly kills the doctor and the guards attending him, finishing with killing an investigating nurse. At Nelson and Murdock, Foggy reads the news of the Gael’s escape and admits to Becky that he feels he’s been making mistake after mistake lately. Meanwhile, Matt and Glorianna are finishing up lunch together, having had a wonderful time. They try and set up another date amidst their conflicting schedules and eventually agree on that Saturday. Glorianna boldly kisses Matt right in the middle of the street and they seem to make things official. Matt drops Glori off at her subway entrance just before hearing of the Gael’s escape from two passing men. Knowing Glori’s in danger, Matt rushes into the subway but her train has already left. He then races out to try and locate the Gael before he can find Glori.

Meanwhile, the Kingpin is alerted to the theft of some files as his, which he correctly attributes to Daredevil. Daredevil uses them to track down where Crossbow is hiding, at an English themed flower shop. Daredevil avoids a surprise attack from Crossbow and easily incapacitates him. Daredevil interrogates Crossbow about his plan to leave the country after his work in the U.S. was finished. Crossbow tells him of a mysterious woman called the Old Woman of Beare who is able to smuggle people back to the U.K. Figuring that the Gael might contact the same woman, given he and Crossbow are both from the British Isles, Daredevil drops Crossbow off at the police and goes to stake out Glori’s apartment. Daredevil finds it empty and anxiously waits for awhile before concluding that Glori’s likely gone into hiding after the Gael’s escape.

The next night, Daredevil stakes out Delahanty’s, the pub where the Woman of Beare is supposed to be, and senses her enter. He sneaks in to confront the Woman, looking for Glori. Daredevil realizes the men at the bar are dead and is attacked by the Woman, who turns out to be the Gael in disguise! Daredevil hears the real Woman trapped in the closet and unlatches it. The Woman runs out as Daredevil and Gael have a brutal fight, ending when Daredevil smashes a chair over the Gael’s head! Daredevil chases after the scared, fleeing Woman of Beare, quickly dealing with her guard outside. He catches up to her as she runs out of steam and only then does he realize that the Woman of Beare was actually Glori! She collapses into Daredevil’s arms, sobbing in relief and exhaustion.

Daredevil (1964 series) #216 Review by (January 21, 2026)

Review: Daredevil faces the Gael once again as he returns to hunt down Glorianna once more! The Gael is notably more menacing this issue than he was in his first appearance, sporting a cooler look on top of that. The weird bit comes when Daredevil tracks down Crossbow for information. Discount Green Arrow goes down just as pathetically as always, so pathetic in fact that he literally never appears again! He tells Daredevil about the mysterious Old Woman of Beare who can smuggle people out of the country. Daredevil assumes the Gael will use the same contact, based solely on the fact that he and Crossbow are both from the British Isles! Even crazier, he turns out to be right! Not only that, the Woman of Beare turns out to be Glori herself (in a pretty obvious twist). Daredevil and Gael have a short but brutal fight and Daredevil rescues Glori, though you’ve got to wonder how he couldn’t tell it was her right away. Pretty cool issue, and certainly better than Gael’s first appearance (with more to come next issue).

Comments: Final appearance of Crossbow. Matt and Glorianna begin dating.
