Defenders: From the Marvel Vault (2011 series) #1 synopsis by reviewer Peter Silvestro
Rating: 3.5 stars

A mysterious blast strikes the Defenders and suddenly a quartet of college students find themselves inhabiting the bodies of the heroes in a pastoral setting and they are confused. Assuming it’s all a dream, Jerry/Silver Surfer takes off into the sky; likewise, Tyler/Sub-Mariner dives into the sea. Jerry/SS flies around the world until he comes upon Chandilar, throneworld of the Shi’ar Empire, where he is greeted by Shalla-Bal. She directs him to the Empress Lilandra, where, having been warned that SS was not himself, she holds out the Staff of the Imperatrix, where SS’s memories flood his mind, starting with Galactus….

Ramona/Hulk decides to appreciate the beauty of the fantasy land when s/he is confronted by the Abomination…who invites Hulk to play on the beach. Then many more of Hulk’s enemies arrive and greet him happily like a bunch of children….

Morgan/Dr. Strange travels through the dimensions, not worrying whether this is reality or a dream or a trap….

Tyler/Subby swims beneath the waves until he encounters Lady Dorma, who has prepared a picnic…and then he spots a submerged Statue of Liberty. Dorma is surprised that Namor doesn’t seem to remember their great victory over the surface world. Tyler and Dorma start kissing but he is halted, explaining that he really loves Ramona, sending Dorma into a rage which ends with her being killed by a falling spike from Lady Liberty’s crown. He panics and screams to be set free…

…and he is, suddenly finding himself and the other Defenders attached to a giant organic machine by tentacles. Tyler, still in Namor’s body, is confused so he tears Ramona/Hulk free…which feels to Hulk as though all of his new friends are deserting him because they don’t like him anymore. Angry Hulk assaults Subby and a massive brawl ensues, in which Dr. Strange and Silver Surfer are also freed. Strange and SS try to figure out what has been going on and the Eye of Agamotto reveals that they have been captured by a refugee collective which had been separated from the rest of its race and needed to create a new family so it captured the minds of the Defenders as well as the random youth. So Silver Surfer uses his Power Cosmic to enhance Strange’s spell to return them all to where they started. They are shaken by what they saw and depart, but Subby is still moved by the depth of the love Tyler felt for Ramona….

Defenders: From the Marvel Vault (2011 series) #1 Review by (February 4, 2026)

Review: Odd story features great Bagley art as a consolation prize. The plot devised by Busiek is a familiar “heroes are mind-controlled” trope with a bizarre twist: a group of young adults, one of whom is a Dungeons & Dragons fan, have their minds inserted into the bodies of the four heroes. What makes it bizarre is that a) there is absolutely nothing in the artwork that suggests this, so Busiek came up with it completely out of his own gray matter and b) there is no real point to it. It largely drops away once the heroes are freed from the machine. Yes, Namor ends up pondering his alter ego for a few minutes to give a bittersweet tang to the end but nothing really requires it. It’s a pretty strange plot twist until it isn’t and kudos to Mark Bagley for distracting us from it with a standard Hulk versus Subby fight and some magical stuff.

Comments: One of five older comics issues which for some reason were not completed or published until now, often pairing classic artists with new talent; they are collected in a TPB titled FROM THE MARVEL VAULT. Issue includes a text article by Kurt Busiek explaining its genesis: it was plotted by Fabian Nicieza and drawn by Mark Bagley as a possible fill-in issue for DEFENDERS Vol. 2 but not used. As Nicieza and Bagley could not return to finish it, Busiek had to come up with a whole new script based on the finished art.

Sole appearances of Jerry, Morgan, Tyler, and Ramona.
