Drax The Destroyer (2005 series) #2 synopsis by reviewer Rob Johnson
Rating: 4 stars

A spaceship ferrying convicts to the Kyln prison broke down and crashed on Earth near Coot's Bluff, Alaska. Prisoners Drax The Destroyer, Lunatik, Paibok the Power Skrull and the 2 Blood Brothers survived. Drax and the BBs got in a fight. Young teens Cammi and Dex saw the crash and are investigating. Lunatik and Paibok left the others to find something useful, like a way off this planet, and they ran across the youngsters.

Blue(?)-skinned Lunatik suggests his usual option of killing them but green-skinned Paibok's working the angles. He tries various Earth languages and settles on English, which the other also understands. He correctly picks Dex as the most afraid and orders him to "Take me to your leader". Dex points at Cammi who's not impressed by the villains. The Skrull smells of roadkill and the other has no face. Paibok asks if it's their 1st 'close encounter'. She replies that super-freaks are never off the TV. Dex runs off screaming 'Aliens' and Cammi flippantly asks why flying saucer aliens always mutilate cattle.

Meanwhile the Blood Brothers have temporarily got the better of Drax and thrown him a long way away. They're worried because during the fight last issue he started talking smarter (or rather, less dumb). The Destroyer leaps back to face them but offers to let them just walk away. However they feel honour-bound to repay him for earlier blows, so the fight continues.

The other 2 aliens walk away from Cammi in search of more useful humans. But then Drax lands near her. The being who used to be Earthman Arthur Douglas's head is still somewhat addled and he mistakes her for his daughter Heather. He remembers the car crash caused by Thanos that killed him and his wife, but is overjoyed that his kid survived. But we also see Moondragon in his mind which suggests that part of him remembers that Heather grew up to be *her*. Now the Brothers arrive to hear a more confused Drax saying he doesn't want to fight because his head hurts. They figure that fighting his makes him smarter but being left alone makes him dumber. So they too walk away. But when Drax calls 'Heather' his daughter she takes advantage and tells him that the Brothers hurt her. And he stomps off in a rage.

Paibok and Lunatik have reached town and made a dramatic entrance into the Army & Navy store. A cop named Stu had tried to arrest them and now the blue guy has him in a headlock while the green 1 discards his primitive gun. Paibok asks if he's in charge but a feisty old woman interrupts to say they want the Mayor, who she points at cowering in a corner.

Drax has caught up with the Brothers and beats them up, accusing them of hurting Heather. Cammi walks away whistling a merry tune.

The Mayor has assured Paibok that Earth has no spaceports. So he has to fall back on plan B. He wants the townfolk to work for him salvaging stuff from the wreck so he can get them to build a spacecraft. And he also wants to use them as hostages if any superheroes show up. The old lady says they won't do it, so he crushes her skull in as an example. And asks for clothes to replace his torn prison uniform.

Cammi is walking past a cave when she hears Dex calling her from inside. He claims he was so scared he's hacked up several days food. He also heard the other aliens fighting and he's wet himself. Cammi wants to go watch more of 'the show'. Dex doesn't but he follows her because he's more scared to be left alone.

Now dressed in human clothes Paibok tells the Mayor to round up the workforce. But they're interrupted by Drax and 1 of the BBs crashlanding into a building as they continue to fight. The other Brother runs up and explains about being hit making Drax smarter. Lunatik (still in tattered prison garb) joins them with bloody hands.

Cammi and Dex are watching from a dark ally as Drax fights both Brothers again. The boy is worried about them being the advance guard of an invasion. Cammi just wants  a closer look, and again Dex reluctantly follows her.

Then Paibok interrupts the fight imitating Thanos which gets Drax' attention allowing Lunatik to slash him from behind and then the Skrull to spear him through the brain with a shape-shifted arm. The aliens think he's dead and Cammi thinks it's all cool.

Drax The Destroyer (2005 series) #2 Review by (February 28, 2026)
Putting Thanos on the cover sells, but it's really the shape-shifting Paibok the Power Skrull.

In his previous apps Keith Giffen always portrayed Lunatik's face as featurelessly black. Here the look is enhanced by his white hair hanging down over it.

Drax was created from dead Arthur Douglas to kill Thanos. His daughter Heather was adopted by Mentor of Titan and raised to be the warrior priestess Moondragon. Who ironically was the person who killed Drax, who was later reborn brain-damaged. As mentioned last issue his intellect and memory were later returned, but he seems to have had a relapse in this series.
