Synopsis

Fantastic Four / Iron Man: Big in Japan #1 synopsis by T Vernon
Rating: 3 stars
The Fantastic Four (Reed Richards, Invisible Woman, Thing, Human Torch) travel to Japan to appear at the dedication of the new Giant Monster Museum and Expo Center to great applause. The Museum’s curator, Dr. Yamane, gives them a tour, showing off the relics of monsters (called Megalosaurs), a gallery of weapons designed to fight the monsters, and a science lab devoted to research using megalosaurus DNA in gene splicing. This last concerns Reed, seeing the potential for disaster. Tony Stark has also been invited to the opening and he is consulting with the scientists. They are shown the fugushi, a fish-bovine hybrid, created to supply milk for Japan's needs. But the creatures panic, smashing through their tanks and stampeding. Other creatures also break out of their enclosures, terrorizing the museum and Iron Man joins the FF in containing them. Thing throws a huge creature out of a window and now they are loose in the city. But all the creatures seem to be afraid, fleeing the area. But what could be frightening them? Then a quartet of giant creatures arise from the ocean and come ashore: Droom, Giganto, Grogg, and Eerok….

Review / Commentaries

Fantastic Four / Iron Man: Big in Japan #1 Review by (June 26, 2021)
Comments: Story takes place between IRON MAN Vols. 3 and 4 and between FOUR #14 and 15. Tony Stark refers to Iron Man as “my bodyguard,” having (supposedly) convinced the world that he is no longer Iron Man in IRON MAN Vol. 3 #89. Droom, originally appearing in TALES TO ASTONISH #9, is Marvel’s equivalent of Godzilla, when they didn’t have the real Godzilla in comics, of course. Giganto first appeared in FANTASTIC FOUR #4, in Atlantis. Grogg’s debut was in STRANGE TALES #83. Eerok, a giant ape, is new in this issue.

Review: Silly little trifle attempt at a mock manga featuring some of Marvel’s big names is pure crazy entertainment. The story is a comedy and the artwork, borrowing only a few manga conventions, is rather goofy, with Reed Richards’ funny expressions being the main source of amusement. Actually, the art more resembles Basil Wolverton than anything made in Japan. Iron Man, Thing, and Human Torch get comparatively little to do. It’s an enjoyable romp, with the cartoony look of comical heroes battling crazy looking kaiju; fun but nothing more.
